In the MEP, you will be engaged in the musical activities of Listening, Composing and Performing to create music, sharpen your skills in aural perception, and broaden your musical knowledge. In the MEP classroom, learning takes place individually and in groups. Opportunities will also be provided for you to follow your own musical inclinations. You will also develop an appreciation of the cultural diversity in music that is vital in developing open-mindedness towards the multiplicity of musical practices.

How do I join the MEP? Frequently Asked Questions
Can I
use my Higher Music grade to gain entry to
a Junior College?
Admission to a Junior College is by merit and is based on the L1R5 ag-
gregate. MEP students at the Secondary level may use their Higher Music grade
in lieu of a Humanities grade in the calculation of their L1R5 aggregate
to gain entry into Junior Colleges.
Do I
have to learn a 2nd instrument?
You can sit for both the ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Music Examinations with the
knowledge of a single instrument. How-ever, if you wish to widen your scope of musical learning, you are encouraged
to pick up another instrument, or join a music-related CCA in
your school.
Can
I leave the MEP at any time?
MEP students are expected to remain in the programme for four years (Secondary) or two years
(JC). A withdrawal is only considered under special circumstances and on a
case-by-case basis.
Thoughts from the MEP Alumni...
“The Music Elective Programme was a unique opportunity to go off the beaten track and explore alternatives to the Singaporean education treadmill; a great chance to learn and do something completely different. It’s certainly sowed the seeds for where I now work as an ethnomusicologist and teacher at Royal Holloway.”
Shzr Ee Tan (Dr.)Director, MMus and Postgraduate Diploma ProgrammesSenior Lecturer, Music DepartmentRoyal Holloway, University of London
“I have truly enjoyed my time in the Music Elective Programme. I gained a deeper under-standing of music, had multiple opportunities to grow as a performer and developed a keen interest in musicology, which I have later continued to explore at university.”
Chow Pei YanMEP Teacher
Anglo-Chinese Junior College
“MEP at A-Level was the most important 2
years of my early musical journey. MEP made
me realise that even though music is a tough
pursuit, I really was passionate about it and
that I wanted to make it my life. The rigour and
intensity of the program along with nurturing
teachers really helped to shape my mindset for
my current professional interest. I also made
lifelong friends along the way and I strongly
encourage any aspiring young musician to join
the program.”Diana Soh (Dr.)
Composer, NAC Young Artist Award 2015 Recipient
“I grew up with the Music Elective Programme,
being very clear that I would pursue it at both the
O and A levels. The programme is one which enabled
me to explore the diverse gen
res of music, spanning
historical periods and cultures. The programme stirred
in me the wonderings of a music analyst, t
he thinking
of a historian and the creativity o
f a composer. It
also instilled in me habits of mindful practice as
a
performer and respect as a crit
ical listener. It not
only helped me appreciate the connection
s between the
macro architecture of music and its inner workings, it
also taught me to always honour the creative process.
This has many applications for me as an educational
leader, now and for the future.”
Mary Seah-Wong
Principal of Tanjong Katong Girls’ School
“The highlight of MEP for me was the Malay and Indian music syllabus, which had a permanent effect on my composition career. I recounted the story of the legendary Malay sisters with asli and zapin dances in “The Sisters’ Islands” (Singapore Composer Award 2006), and weaved gong kebyar, pelog scales and Indian style melodies into “Conluence” (2009). Thus, through MEP, I developed not just as a musician, but as a culturally sensitive Singaporean musician.”
Wang ChenweiComposer and Audio Engineer, Wei MusicHead of Research, The TENG Company
“MEP opened up the world for me in an age
before the Internet. Absolutely life cha
nging!”
