END SEMESTER EXAMINATION (July-December), 2015COURSE TITLE: Production Engineering & Workshop TechnologyMAX MARKS: 100COURSE CODE: ATEP 901 TIME: 3 HoursInstructions:

1. Answer as many questions as you can from each groupseparately.

2. The question paper consists of 4 groups of 35 marks each, outof which the maximum score will be limited to 25 marks only.

3. Figures in the margin indicate full marks.

Group A

1. Describe the principle of an oxy-fuel gas-welding process. List thevarious fuel gases that are used for the oxy-fueI gas welding processes, describing the applications of each of them. (5+ 10=15)

2. How is an arc obtained in arc welding? How is polarity defined inthe case of a DC welding source? How is it advantageously used? (10)

3. Explain the TIG and MIG systems of arc welding. Give theapplications of each. What are the typical electrode materials used intungsten inert gas welding? (10)

Group B

4. What is the significance of recrystallization temperature in metalworking? Explain the nature of plastic deformation that takes place inmetal forming processes. What is hot working and Cold working asreferred to metal forming processes. What are the advantages of hotworking over cold working process? (5+5+5=15)

5. Briefly explain the principle of rolling with a neat sketch. Whatneutral point and angle of bite is as referred to rolling? Explain therelationship between the entry, exit and roll velocity as applicable in arolling operation. (5+5+5=15)

6. Explain with the help of neat sketch different types of rolling standarrangement as applicable in a rolling mill. (5)

Group C

7. What is the objective of Production Planning and Control? Explainin brief the different phases of control of manufacture as applicable inproduction planning and control. Mention the factors affecting theProduction Planning and Control to manufacturing. (5+5+5=15)

8. What are the different types of production systems? Show with thehelp of a schematic, the various types of production with respect tovolume of production and product variety. Mention in brief the variousfeatures of the different production systems. (5+10=15)

9. "To manage is to forecast and plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate and to contro\.- Henry Fayol" Justify the statement as

mentioned with respect to the management functions to accomplish theobjectives and goals of an organization. (5)

Group D

10. Assuming uniform cooling in all directions, determine the dimensions ofa 90 mm cube casting after it cools down to room temperature. Thesolidification shrinkage for the cast metal is 5% and the solid contraction is7.5%. (5)

11. Two solid work-pieces (i) sphere with radius R, (ii) a cylinder withdiameter equal to its height, have to be sand cast. Both work-pieces have thesame volume. Show that the cylindrical work-piece will solidify faster thanthe spherical work-piece. (l0)

12. Compare the solidification times for castings of three different shapes ofsame volume: Cubic, cylindrical (with height equal to its diameter) andspherical. (l0)

13. With cylindrical riser, prove that for a longer solidification time, diameterof riser=height of riser. (10)
