The EventMt. Evans Scenic Byway is the highest paved road in North America begging to be assaulted by Tesla’s Model S owners. With the introduction of this awesome vehicle, I am organizing a Model S Road Rally for Saturday June 7, 2014 from Idaho Springs, CO (35 miles west of Denver) to the summit of Mt. Evans and back.
The v iews a long the h ighway are breathtaking, as is the elevation, which summits 14,256 feet above sea level. The spring flowers should be in bloom, as will be an abundance of wildlife, such as Mountain Goats and Bighorn Sheep.
The StartWe need to meet up around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 7th, at the Clear Creek County Middle School parking lot toward the west end of Idaho Springs. This location is South of the I-70 at Exit 240. Take the exit; turn South on Highway 103 toward Mt. Evans, and the Middle School driveway is a few hundred feet ahead on the right-hand side immediately past the Ranger Station and Visitor’s Center.
The Disclaimer Tesla Motors is not a sponsor, nor are they in any way affiliated with this rally. It is organized and participated in by Model S owners and Tesla enthusiasts.
Drivers must posses a valid driver’s license and requisite automobile insurance. Colorado laws of the road apply. There may be a small fee ($10) per car to enter the park for each car driver; however, if I am negotiating with the Park authorities to wave this fee for Model S owners. No guarantee of success, but be prepared to pay nonetheless.
The Route The route to the summit is 28.5 miles, gaining approximately 7,000 feet of elevation (see profile and map on next page). We will depart the Middle School driving south on Highway 103 approximately 13 miles to Echo Lake. Here we turn right onto Highway 5 and pass through the guard/gate to the park. Normally the entrance fee is $10 per car; however, on June 8th the entrance fee is waived, so entrance is free – yes!
After passing the guardhouse, it is about 10 miles to Summit Lake (elevation 12,830 feet), followed by another 5 miles to the actual summit. CAUTION! – the road approaching Summit Lake is badly in need of repair, with a few heaves, so we need to drive slow and treat these like primary speed bumps. A WORD OF ADVICE: visitors to the park often fail to realize it can be 30-40oF cooler at the summit, as compared to the start area at 7,500 feet in Idaho Springs (hint, hint – bring a jacket, preferably with Tesla logo).
