Thereislittledisagreementthattheplanetonwhichweliveistheonlyresourceforhumanexistence.Currentchangesinthe‘systemEarth’willhaveaprofoundimpactonourfuturestandardofliving.Mostprominently,thethemesofclimateandenergyareofgreatandimmediateconcern,withbifurcationsinanumberoffieldssuchastheavailabilityofwaterandfood,globalwarminganditseffectsonsealevelandweatherintensity,butalsointermsofthemosteffectivemeansofexploringandexploitingEarth’sresources.Inallthesefields,itisevidentthatEarthisasysteminwhichoceans,solidearth,atmosphere,landcoverandcryosphereinteractincomplexwaysandonmanydifferentscalelevels.Thereisinteractionfrommicrotoglobal3Dspatialscalesandfromreal-timetogeologicaltimescales.Theonlywayinwhichthissystemcanbeproperlyunderstood,predictedandexploitedistofocusonthisinteractionviaobservationsandmodelling.

TheGeoscienceandRemoteSensingMSctrackatTUDelftisbasedonthequestionofhowadvancedobservationtechnology–incombinationwithinnovativedataprocessingandmodellingtechniques–canprovideuswithadequateinformationonthesystemEarth.Theseempiricalresultsandtheirinterpretationarecrucialtomakingtherightdecisionsforthefutureofourplanet.Ifyouareinterestedinatmosphericsciences,geophysics,climatechange,Earthobservation,satellitetechnology,geodesyandothertopicsrelatedtogeoscience,thisistheMSctrackforyou.Animportantfeatureofthetrackisitshighlevelofflexibility,whichenableseachindividualstudenttodesignapersonalprogramme.Thisflexibilityisachievedbyprovidingacoreprogrammecomprisingfundamentalcoursesonobservationtheory,understandingthesystemEarthandgeo-dataacquisition.Inadditiontothiscoreprogramme,studentschooseapersonalisedcurriculum,selectingcoursessuitedtotheirpersonalandcareerinterests.

Therearethreemainareasofinterestinthistrack:

GeophysicsfocusesonunderstandinghowthesystemEarthworks,analysingresultsofthelatestsatellite/ground-basedmissionsandanalysingnaturalhazards,suchasearthquakesandvolcanoes.

Atmosphericsciencesfocusesonweather,atmosphericchemistry,cloudsandradiation,airqualityandaerosols,andclimatechange.

Geodesyandremotesensingcoverssurveying,GPSforpositioningandnavigation,remotesensing,acquiringandanalysinggeo-datainordertoobservetheEarth,andmonitoringandsurveyingcivilinfrastructure.

PrecipitationestimationfrominfraredsatelliteimageryRadar-basedrainfall-rateestimationAirpollutionmeasurementswithasmartphonecameraLong-termrecordofArcticandAntarcticseaiceextents.

"Thistrackenabledmetodesignmyownstudywithintheprogramme.Iselectedmostlyremotesensingcourses.Aftercompletingthecourses,IstartedmythesisinthefieldofMathematicalGeodesyandPositioning.ThetopicofmythesisistheestimationoftidalparametersusingGPSobservationsonabuoy.Forthismultidisciplinaryresearch,wecooperatedwiththeWaterManagementdepartmentoftheFacultyofCivilEngineering&Geosciences.Igainedknowledgeabouttidalpropagation,probabilityandestimationtheoryandGPS.However,theresearchwasnotlimitedtotheory:severalmeasurementcampaignswereconductedontheScheldeEstuary,creatinganicebalancebetweentheoreticalandpracticalwork.Thisbalanceis,inmyview,themostimportantandfunaspectofworkingasageoscienceengineer.But,nowforthemostimportantquestion:whatarethecareeropportunities?Well,Iwaspleasantlysurprised.Ihaveworkedasaconsultantfortheoilandgasindustryonthetopicsofgeodesyandhydrography,andtravelledaroundtheworldworkingonlargeinternationalprojects."

ImaginginterseismicmotionontheSanAndreasfaultwithspace-borneradarModellingtheimpactofthelastglaciationonverticalmovementsUnmannedAerialVehicle(UAV)forEarthscienceandclimatemonitoringGPSnavigationforadvanceddriverassistancesystems

GraduatesoftheGRSprogrammehaveawidechoiceofcareerpaths.Inthefieldsofgeoscienceandgeo-information,thereisahighdemandforacademicprofessionalsinindustry,governmentalandinstitutionalorganisationsandinacademia.Inindustry,youcanfindgraduateswithaGRS-backgroundincompaniessuchasFugro,ARCADIS,Sweco,Shell,NAM,Nuon,AnteaGroupandnumeroussmallvalue-addingandsurveyingcompanies.GovernmentalorganisationsincludeRijkswaterstaat,watermanagementboards,provinces,ministriesandgovernment-relatedinstitutionssuchasKNMI,TNO,Deltares,NWOandECN.OurcloselinkwithspacetechnologyopensthewaytotraineeshipsandfuturecareerswiththeEuropeanSpaceAgency(ESA)andNASA.OurgraduatesadviseonnewmissionsandtechnologyforEarthobservation,navigationandspacescience.SomeofourgraduateschooseanacademiccareerandpursueaPhDdegree,eitheratTUDelftorotheruniversities.Internationally,ourgraduatescanbefoundworkingatinstitutionssuchasCaltech,Stanford,ETHZurich,MITandPolitecnicodiMilano,tonamejustafew.

"ObservationandmodellingrelatedtocivilengineeringandappliedEarthscienceformthecoreoftheGRStrack,sincebothareprerequisitesforunderstanding,predictingandexploitingtheEarthsystem,andformonitoringandsurveyingcivilinfrastructure.Studentsgainknowledgeandskillsrelevanttoremotesensingtechniques,analysisandvisualizationofremotesensingdata,methodsformodellingandsimulation,andextractionofsignalsofinterestforapplicationsinengineeringandgeosciences.

GraduatesfromtheGRStrackservetherapidly-growingmarketforaccuratemonitoringandmappingofourchangingEarth,ondifferenttemporalandspatialscales,andofcivilinfrastructure.Theyaretheprofessionalswhounderstandthetechnicaloptionsavailabletotheseends.Theycanprocessandanalyseremotesensingdatadependingontherequiredapplication,linkthesedatatomodelsandprovideobservationalevidence,anddevelopnewandinnovativeapplicationsofthesedata.Forinstance,governmentalagenciesmayrequirethedatatodeveloppolicystrategiesandmonitorcompliancewithenvironmentalregulations;application-orientedbusinessesareseekinginnovativemonitoringsolutionsthatusethelatestdataacquisitiontechniques;andsoftwareengineeringcompaniesneedtechnicalexpertswhocanleaddevelopmentprogramsinthisarea."

DutchBScdegreeIfyouholdaDutchBScdegreecloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youcanbeadmitteddirectly.However,ifyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalleda‘bridgingprogramme’.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
