Curriculum and Programs

• Everyday Math• Storytown• Being a Writer

Assessments• ELA -Theme tests, HFW tests, spelling

tests, running records, writing samples, etc.

• Math – Written tests, orals and slates, open responses, focus facts, etc.

• Various types of evaluations will be used.

Science and Social Studies

• Please remember that participation by your child is the emphasis in these areas.

• Science topics covered throughout the year: senses, magnets, plants, animals, dental health.

• Social Studies topics covered throughout the year: families, school, celebrations, and important people.

Homework• Strictly practice or review• Assigned Monday-Thursday• A homework checklist will be placed into the back of your

child’s folder on Monday of each week. This should stay in the folder until Friday.

• Home reading will be part of daily homework starting in October (Reading Log). Anywhere from 10-15 minutes everyday is a good start. The main goal is to have your child develop a love of reading and writing.

• Parental guidance and active participation in your child’s learning are important parts of your child’s success in first grade.
