3FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY
MRIL®-Prime SAFETY Permanent Magnetic Field The magnetic field is extremely strong near the Ferrite magnet
(150G) and twice that strength near the prepole Magnets.
Avoid bringing any metallic objects close to the sonde such as maintenance tools, steel toed shoes, metallic debris, catwalk, drillpipes, and other sondes.
Tool Weight The sonde (6” Mril Prime) weights 775 lbs. Never attempt to lift it
without appropriate lifting equipment.
Use a small portable crane or certified lifting straps to lift the sonde.
Avoid any impact to the sonde.

Electrical Safety and Precautions
Check the leakage and continuity characteristics of your wireline.
Bleed-off the high voltage stored in the capacitor before physically disconnecting the tool string.
Always pay attention to proper power up and power down procedures when running the tool with other services.
Medical Implants
The magnetic field emitted by the sonde’s mandrel can cause discomfort for people using ferromagnetic implants.
Persons with medical implants must stay 10 feet from the MRIL tool.

Fiberglass Sleeves
The fiberglass sleeve that surrounds the MRIL sonde can cause irritation and discomfort when it is directly in contact with skin.
Tool Storage and Transportation
Keep the sonde away from wireline drums and other tools that have photo-multiplier tubes. Some tools that could be affected from the housing magnetization include: D4TG, SDLT, NGRT, CSNG, PSGT
Use the MRIL tool transport truck or the MRIL transport rack for transportation purposes

MRIL - New TechnologyMRIL - New TechnologyOil Field: NMR Tool
Medicine: MRI Instrument
Started in Medical Industry
NUMAR (1991) started “modern” NMR application in oil industry by using a permanent magnet and radio frequency.

MRIL®-Prime features
Open hole centralized tool:slim sonde= 4.875-in. ODstandard sonde= 6-in. ODMRIL-XL sonde= 6-in. OD (decentralized)
Optimized with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) principles.
Uses a permanent magnet and a pulsed radio frequency to analyze fluids in pore spaces of reservoir rock.
Measures porosity and other petrophysical parameters related to the productivity of hydrocarbons in the downhole environment.

MRIL®-Prime SUBASSEMBLIES
D4TG/D4TS-NGRT Telemetry and Gamma Ray
MRICC The Capacitor cartridge stores the energy used by
the transmitter
MREC (instrument) Electronic cartridge provides transmission and
reception of NMR signals, data collection, and communication with the up-hole system.
MRIL-Prime sonde Relay sub connects the transmitter to capacitors. Two 1-foot pre-polarization “Prepole” Magnets. RF Antenna and Permanent Magnet. Equalization Sub filled with oil and a piston used
to equalize pressures.

MRIL®-Prime PurposeMRIL tools can provide: Quantities of fluids in the rock
– Total porosity independent of lithology (TPHI)– Effective Porosity= Non Clay Porosity (MPHI)– Capillary bound water (MBVI)– Free Fluid (MFFI)
Properties of the fluids– Permeability profile along the well – Fluid Characterization (Water, Oil, and gas)– Viscosity (light or viscous oil)
Size of the pores that contains these fluids– Pore-Size Distribution

What makes this tool different ?

MRIL®-Prime Theory Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)
Response of atomic nuclei to magnetic fields.
All nuclei with an odd number of nucleons (such as 1H,13C, and 23Na) have a spin angular momentum and a magnetic moment.
They Behave like spining bar magnets and have a response
frequency (known as the Larmor frequency) which is related to the gyromagnetic ratio of an element and its magnetic field.

Imposing a fixed magnetic field and using RF signal on a group of nuclei causes them to behave in a predictable manner that can provide petrophysical information.
