Introduction

As geographers you are expected to know, understand and demonstrate a wide range of essential geographical skills. These skills will be tested in some way in

the final examinations and are therefore an important course component. The examination specification clearly outlines the following:

You will need to develop a variety of basic, investigative, cartographic, graphical, applied ICT and statistical skills.

You will need to develop a critical awareness of the appropriateness and limitations of different skills and resources.

The level of accuracy, sophistication and detail are all expected to be greater at AS than at GCSE, and similarly between AS and A2.

You will need a basic mathematics set, including a calculator.

The wide range of skills required fall under the following categories:

Basic Skills – Mr Colliver & Mr Dodd

Investigative Skills – Mr Colliver

Cartographic Skills – Mr Dodd

Graphical Skills – Mr Dodd

ICT Skills – Mr Dodd

Statistical Skills – Mr Colliver

This booklet includes all the skills that will be covered by Mr Dodd.

For each skill outlined in this booklet make sure that you can:

Describe and explain the resource geographically

Critically evaluate the resource in terms of its appropriateness and limitations

Suggest improvements to the resource where necessary
