ACooperation between Syria and Italy for Conservation andPreservation of Cultural Heritage and Damascus CitadelNorth Gallery, Implementation of exhibition for mosaic inDamascus Citadel – North Gallery,ID No. AID 006935/01/4/PMU Laboratories / TD02 are thegreat result of scientific collaboration betweenDirectorate General of Antiquities and Museum of Syria,Ministry of Turism of Syria and Cooperation Italy-Syria.The Syrian national cultural heritage is one of the mostimpressive in the world and its preservation representsan important contribution to world culture and a priorityfor the Syrian Government.The Italian Government, in cooperation with the SyrianAuthorities, has offered its support to Syria in its effortsto achieve the goal of promoting its cultural treasures.The Italian Ministry of ForeignAffairs, through the Directorate General of Development,has focused its activities in the cultural sector on therestoration of the magnificent mosaics preserved in theCitadel of Damascus.The objective is to reopen it and create a cultural districtwithin its premises and to allow the people of Syria, andthe world, to fully appreciate this magnificent building, byreturning it to its inherent cultural and historicalmeaning. The success is demonstrated by the resultsachieved in the rehabilitation of a number of importantmosaic panels, which were stored in the warehouses ofthe DGAM.The rehabilitation activities have been carried out underthe supervision of RavennAntica Foundation and a team12/11/12 Unibohttps://anagrafericerca.unibo.it/php4/prodotti/scheda_vis.php?tipologia=7.1&sk=enontyjjphA/LACaa… 2/2of Syrian restorers. The mosaic panels are coming fromNorthern Syria,partly from the Neeha site near Ma‘arrat al-Nouman,partly from the al-Rayân site in Edlib, and werediscovered between 1950 and 1972. Mosaics belongs toByzantine period (the second half of the fifth centuryA.D.).
