Technology for the Future – Moore’s Law

By: Alex Rugguri, Jessica Miele, Kemi Ajibare, and Matt Price

Processors – Desktops & LaptopsSmaller, stronger, and more energy-efficient

Two major players: Intel and AMD

IntelSandy Bridge (32nm) Ivy Bridge (22nm)USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt

AMDBulldozer Piledriver

3D TransistorsTri-gate transistors replace flat, two-dimensional

streams of transistors with a 3D structure.

The technology will allow Intel to create transistors that are faster (37%), smaller and more power-efficient (50%).

Processors - SmartphonesQuad-core processors

Performance comparable to desktops

Better battery life

Nvidia Tegra 3

QualcommSnapdragon S4

Motorola ATRIX

Moore’s LawThe ability for more powerful chips to be produced at a

cheaper price every eighteen months.

It’s possible because distance between the pathways inside silicon chips gets smaller with each successive generation.

End of Moore’s LawThe shrinking will eventually hit a limit.

The three driving forces are size, heat, and power.

The chip pathways are unable to be shorter than a molecule.

The risk of quantum tunneling occurring.

Technological FootprintAccording to Moore's law there will be a time when we

reach the smallest usable footprint.

It hasn’t occurred yet, but we are getting closer to reaching it.

Some say it will happen in the near future. One person estimated the time will be around 2023.

The Point of Smallest Technological Footprint

The size limitation of a chip.

The size may shrink to a point where it is not functional.

Smartphone

Raspberry Pi

Laptops

Future of technologyThe future of technology is almost unpredictable

Hard to determine whether ideas & products will be successful or not

How long will a successful product last?

Future Technology PredictionsAll touch screen and hands-on products

Scanning will also gather information

Active workspaces

Meetings will have intelligent participation

Managing from any device

Easier maneuvering of tasks

Future Predictions- Computing

Cloud computing

SASS- form of cloud computing, portable, subscribes to 3rd party software

Supercomputing- hundreds of microprocessors working in unison

Computing cont.Social computing

Ubiquitous computing- information processing is integrated into everyday objects

Grid computing- enables multiple computers working together to solve a problem

Are future products beneficial to the business community?

We think these products will be effective

Products will help businesses survive and thrive

More advanced, faster products will help to complete work & tasks
