Our second graders were given a challenge: can you build a structure to hold a book off the floor using only one material with tape? Here’s what Mrs. Schneider’s students did.

First group (photo above). At first you tried plastic straws, then you used coffee stirrers. Hmm. Why did you think coffee stirrers would be the best material to hold a book? Students answered: the coffee stirrers are hard, so we thought it would be sturdier. Also, we thought we could tape them together easier than straws.

Second group: (photo to right) tried using pipe cleaners. They thought those would be better because they are bendable.

Third group: (photo below) the students very carefully layered two across and two over, back and forth, repeatedly to create a strong design.
