FROM mayor mike kennedyLetter
s I look at Monroeville today, Isee the same small town inwhich I grew up— the same,
but better! Children can still ride their bikesto the historic downtown square, familiesdrive their golf carts around neighborhoodsand young families are everywhere! Safetyand quality of life are a primary concern. The city of Monroeville is working hard tomaintain and improve areas such as WhiteyLee Park and the former Vanity Fair Millsproperty at the city’s entrance on AlabamaAvenue. As mayor, I continue to push forinfrastructure improvements to our streets, lighting and landscape.
Our retail options have dramaticallyimproved in recent years and we continueour push for new jobs in manufacturingand distribution. Through our closealignment with the regional CoastalGateway alliance, and our ownMonroeville/Monroe County EconomicDevelopment Authority, we are beginningto see results that will eventually translateinto jobs. I recently spent two weeks inChina calling on executives of Chinesecompanies that have an interest inestablishing a presence in the United States.I have every reason to think that persistencein pursuing these opportunities willeventually pay off for our city and county.
As we go forward into the Spring of 2014, Iam thankful for our town and look forwardto hearing from you, our citizens, aboutwhat we can do to continue to make thisone of the best small towns in America!
Best regards,Mike Kennedy, Mayor

MONROE COUNTY HERITAGE MUSEUM –THE MAIN ATTRACTION!Monroeville’s 1903 courthouse, which once served as the countyseat, is home to the Monroe County Heritage Museum. Thebuilding was lovingly restored in a grassroots effort beginning in1989 and concluding in 2002. The museum today featurespermanent exhibits dedicated to Monroeville writers Nelle HarperLee and Truman Capote, who were childhood companions, andannually attracts over 30,000 visitors, more than the county’spopulation.
Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, “To Kill AMockingbird” was published July 11, 1960. Its publication putMonroeville on the map for literary tourists; the novel, now in its54th year of publication continues to draw visitors to Monroevillefrom all over the world.
The film version of “To Kill A Mockingbird” debuted in 1962, andwon a best-actor Oscar for Gregory Peck, who portrayed Atticus, and an adapted screenplay award for Horton Foote.
Christopher Sergel’s ever popular theatrical version followed, andhas been a springtime tradition at Monroeville’s historiccourthouse since 1991. Enacted by a volunteer cast, TheMockingbird Players, and set in the O. L. Biggs Amphitheater, onthe west side of the courthouse square, (Act 1) and upstairs in thehistoric courtroom (Act 2), the production annually plays to soldout audiences. The 25th Production of “To Kill A Mockingbird”was listed in the Top 10 Events for Alabama Tourism for 2014.
A whole industry has grown up around Monroeville’s role as“Literary Capital of Alabama,” a title bestowed in 1997 by officialdeclaration of the Alabama Legislature.
There are two walking tours of the downtown area, one narratedwith signage, that relates a history of homes and structures in thedowntown historic district. In 2009, over 400 structures inMonroeville’s historic downtown were designated by The NationalPark Service as worthy of designation on “The National Registerof Historic Places.” These include the 1903 museum, the U.S. PostOffice, the Monroe County Public Library, and many othercommercialand residentialstructures.
Businessesthroughout thedowntownmaintain a“main street”flavor. Artistsandentrepreneursoffer uniqueitems for sale, such asoriginal artwork, pottery, quilts, handpainted ceramics, embroidered items, furniture, woodworking and more. The Bird’sNest Gift Shop, inside the Monroe County Heritage Museum, offers a wide selection of items, ranging from Rikards Mill gritsand cornmeal, to old fashioned childrens toys, artwork, handtowels and more. The gift shop has been termed “a destination initself.”
Whatever the occasion, a visit to Monroeville is not completewithout an extensive tour of the courthouse square area!

Alabama Southern is a state-supported, fullyaccredited, comprehensive two-year collegeserving southwest Alabama. It boasts over80,000 alumni. In an era of fallingenrollments for many of the state’s two-yearcolleges, Alabama Southern has actuallyachieved a 4.9 percent increase inenrollment, with over 1,370 students in2013/14. Alabama Southern offers many ofthe same courses as four-year universities at afraction of the cost. onroeville, centrally located in southwest Alabama, has much to offer new and expanding businesses. Thetown has transitioned from one of the leading textile
communities in the south to a hub for wood and wood products.Since the textile industry began its offshore moves in the mid-1990s,Monroeville and Monroe County have had to reinvent the wheel, so tospeak, in defining a new strategy in economic development.
Currently at the helm of Monroe County’s economic developmentstrategy is Glen Haab, assisted by Kelly Black in the Monroeville/Monroe County Economic Development Authority Office. Theywork very closely with the five county Coastal Gateway EconomicDevelopment Alliance to identify prospective businesses and assistexisting industries in their needs.
It helps that Monroeville has established an Advantage Site in itsMonroeville Industrial Park, and that several properties in the park areavailable for ready occupancy, one a 30,000-square-foot speculativebuilding, expandable to 90,000 square feet, and the other a 60,000-square-foot metal building. Other properties and sites are availablethroughout the county.

It is also a distinct advantage that Monroeville and Monroe Countyhave a strong employment base. Alabama River Cellulose, owned byGeorgia-Pacific, is the county’s largest employer and has a large trackrecord of capital reinvestment in its mill, as well as being atremendous contributor to community projects. In addition to thefluff pulp it manufactures at Alabama River Cellulose, which drivesits being the largest commercial shipper through the Port of Mobile,Georgia-Pacific also manufactures panel products in Monroe Countyat its other industrial location in Monroeville: Panel Products, LLC.
As a wood products hub, Monroeville boasts several diverse woodproducts companies, such as Rocky Creek Lumber, owned by Roy O.Martin; Harrigan Lumber Company; Owens Lumber Company;Scotch Plywood; B & B Cabinet Doors; and others. The direct andindirect employment opportunities offered by these outstandingemployers drives Monroe County’s economy. In addition, GatePrecast Company, which manufactures architectural precastconcrete, has continued to ramp up employment as it “shapesskylines” in the south.
In the world of today, everything is logistics. Monroeville’s optimallocation, with two connections to Interstate 65, and its location asthe hub of the El Camino East/West Corridor (U.S. 84) in Alabama, puts it within 24-hour access to two-thirds of the U.S. economy.
The county is also well served by Monroe County Airport, with its6,100 foot runway. The airport is heavily utilized by civilian andmilitary aircraft, and, in fact, serves as a training area for the military. The Federal Aviation Administration is currently upgrading theairport’s infrastructure.
County and city leaders have also identified opportunities withChinese companies that wish to locate in the United States, closer totheir respective consumer bases. No stone has been left unturned inthis endeavor to sell Monroe County to Chinese investors: The Cityof Monroeville hosted two Alabama China Partnership Symposiumsin 2012/13, and Monroe County Commission Chairman Greg Norristraveled extensively in Hong Kong and China on businessdevelopment missions during this same period, joined byMonroeville Mayor Mike Kennedy on a fall, 2013 trip. Downtown Monroeville, with its quaint courthouse square, surrounding shops, restaurants and museum, is also a draw forresidents and tourists alike. Several entrepreneurs are scattered onthe courthouse square, and in this age where everything is availableeverywhere, there are a plenitude of unique items available onlyhere, or perhaps through online outlets.
When exploring Monroe County’s economic developmentprospects, one should never discount the county’s natural beauty, nor its acknowledged position as a mecca for hunting, fishing andoutdoor recreational activities. An exciting rails-to-trails project isunder development in north Monroe County, and the county is adraw as a retirement location for a population that is tired of traffic, lines and waits, and revels in the clear beauty of the night skies overthe surrounding countryside.
