India working on unmanned tanks, vessels, robotic weaponry for future wars

NEW DELHI, May 20:

In an ambitious defence proj-ect, the Government has startedwork on incorporating artificialintelligence (AI) to enhance theoperational preparedness of thearmed forces in a significant waythat would include equipping themwith unmanned tanks, vessels, aer-ial vehicles and robotic weaponry.

The move is part of a broaderpolicy initiative to prepare theArmy, Navy and the Air Force fornext generation warfare and comesamid rising Chinese investments indeveloping critical applications ofAI for its military.

Secretary Defence ProductionAjay Kumar said the Governmenthad decided to introduce AI in allthe three forces as it would be a"big area" considering the require-ments of future warfare.

He said a high-powered taskforce headed by Tata SonsChairman N Chandrasekaran wasfinalising the specifics and frame-work of the project, which wouldbe implemented in a "partnershipmodel" between the armed forcesand the private sector.

"It is India's preparation fornext generation warfare. This (AI)is where the future is going to be.We need to prepare ourselves forthe next generation warfare whichwill be more and more technologydriven, more and more automatedand robotised," he said.

Like many other world powers,India had also started work on theapplication of AI to boost the capa-bilities of its armed forces, Kumarsaid, adding that unmanned aerialvehicles, unmanned naval vessels, unmanned tanks and automaticrobotic rifles as weapon systemswill have an extensive use in futurewars.

"We need to create capabilities

for all these platforms," he said.Military sources said the proj-

ect would also include productionof a range of unmanned platformsfor the three services.

They said the forces werestrongly pushing for extensiveapplications of AI in their opera-tional preparedness on a par withleading global military powers.

The sources said the applica-tion of AI in the surveillance ofIndia's borders with China andPakistan could significantly easethe pressure on armed forces per-sonnel guarding the sensitive fron-tiers.

China has been pouring in bil-lions of dollars into AI research andmachine learning. Last year, itunveiled an ambitious plan tomake the country the AI innovationcentre of the world by 2030.

The US, Britain, France andthe European Union are alsoinvesting significantly in AI, anarea of computer science devotedto the creation of intelligentmachines.

The US has been carrying outsuccessful operations targeting ter-rorist hideouts in Afghanistan andNorthwest Pakistan usingunmanned drones which operatewith the help of artificial intelli-gence.

"AI is going to be a very bigconcept in the coming years. Majorcountries of the world are nowworking on strategies to see howAI can be used for defence forces. We are also moving ahead. What isunique about this initiative is thatwe have industry and defenceforces working jointly," Kumarsaid.

He said the recommendationsof the task force were likely tocome in by June and then theGovernment would take the proj-ect forward. (PTI)
