Reflections on the
Cover Page
Based on the original Marathi article of Shri
Shreedhar Parab published under the column
‘Mukhaprushtha Pahatana’ in Yoga Varta's issue for
the month of August 2016, Dr. Manasi Bawdekar
(YVN's Yoga Teacher) has excellently converted it
into the English article which is being published
hereunder with profound thanks to Dr. Manasi
Bawdekar whose mobile no. is 9820181182.
The calm, serene and ever smiling figure of the
Founder-Chairman of Yoga Vidya Niketan, Padmashri
Yogacharya Shri Sadashiv Prahlad Nimbalkar, alias our
beloved Nimbalkar Guruji on the front page of
Yogavarta has always been a source of great happiness
and inspiration for all of us! He is indeed an epitome
of wisdom and benevolence. His life, passionately
dedicated to the propagation of Yoga, has been an
excellent example to emulate and a great motivation for all of us to walk
on his footsteps. His 91 years of rich life journey to percolate Yogabhyas
down across all strata of population has been undoubtedly
commendable. Yoga education along with its propagation and
promotion for over 50 years has been his sole aim in life. He has been
doing this ceaselessly and with complete dedication for the masses.
Nimbalkar Guruji will complete his 91 years of yogic life journey on 27th
July 2017 and step successfully into the 92nd year with intense love,
affection and enormous respect from all his disciples and well-wishers.
Born in the pious and saintly land of Ahmednagar in Maharashtra,
Nimbalkar guruji is no less than a saint himself. The mission and actions
Yoga Varta : July 2017 6
`moJdmVm©
of saints have never been confined to a few privileged and learned in the
society. Man-made differences based on religion, caste, gender, colour,
language, etc have never been able to create boundaries and limitations
to the saintly activities in any pious land. The mission of Nimbalkar guruji
to take Yogabhyas at every doorstep is no less than a saintly act. All those
who have been in close acquaintance with guruji will wholeheartedly
accept that he possesses the true qualities of a saint. His unadulterated
simplicity, sharp intellect, transparent actions, calm, quiet and pleasant
disposition, amicable nature, genuine urge towards social welfare,
tremendous respect for his own Guru – Parampujya Kuvalyanandaji and
his inherent nature of instilling noble values in others prove that he is
indeed a saintly figure of this modern era.
Along with a saint, Nimbalkar guruji can be rightly referred to as a
'Yogi'. The poetic verses created by Shri Samartha Ramdas Swamiji
popularly referred to as the ‘Manache Shloka’ (_ZmMo ícmoH$) depicts a
Yogi as the one who is egoless, ever-forgiving, compassionate and
devoid of greed and agitated mind . This description totally fits into the
personality of guruji. So indisputably he can be referred to as the ‘Yogic
Saint’ (g§V`moJr)!These divine qualities of Nimbalkar Guruji were well recognised by
the Indian Government in the form of conferring the prestigious
National level 'Padmashri Award' at the hands of honourable President
of India in appreciation and recognition of Nimbalkar guruji's long
dedicated services in the field of yoga. However, this award has in no
way changed guruji's benevolent nature, philanthropic behaviour,
simplicity, broad outlook and love to be with the people. He has
successfully kept himself detached from all these accolades and
admirations just like the lotus (nÙ) and that proves the aptness of
conferring him with Padmashri. Thus calling him ‘Santayogi Padmashri’
(g§V`moJr nÙlr) would not be an exaggeration.
‘Walk with the wise and you grow wise’ has been experienced in
true sense by those who have had the golden opportunity to walk

guruji's path of
dedication and passion
towards yoga and learn
from him. He has not
only touched the lives of
hundreds of his disciples
but have also trans-
formed them into
passionate ‘yogakarmis’
like himself. This is his
special quality which
makes him a godly figure
for all, the beloved
‘Santayogi Padmashri Nimbalkar Guruji’ (g§V`moJr nÙlr qZ~miH$a JwéOr).His first book ‘Aarogyasathi Yoga’ (Amamo½`mgmR>r `moJ) in Marathi
published in 1977 became so popular that Yoga Vidya Niketan has the
privilege of publishing its 23 editions and selling total 1.25 lakhs copies
thereof. He can be regarded as the pioneer of the Yoga series
broadcasted on television through the program called ‘Kamgar Vishwa’
(H$m_Jma {dœ) way back in 1974-75. It was telecasted first in Marathi and
later in Hindi. Since then, Nimablkar guruji's work in the sphere of Yoga
has spread widely not only within Maharashtra but across the country
and abroad. Consequently, all those yoga teachers involved and
associated directly or indirectly in the expansion of Yoga Vidya Niketan
for the propagation of Yoga have considered Nimbalkar guruji as their
'Guru' - A Guru with tremendous energy, incomparable enthusiasm and
unique blend of humanity and service at the young age of 91 who
doesn't fit into the typical 'oldest old' criteria of age and leaves everyone
perplexed looking at his princely, attractive yet calm and serene figure.
Nimbalkar guruji was born on 27th July 1926 at Ahmednagar in
Maharashtra. After having bagged a series of educational degrees viz.
M.A, B.T., D.P.Ed., Hindi Teacher Charter and a Homeopath, he joined
Dr. Manasi Bawdekar with respected

and successfully completed a one year residential course of physical
education at Kandivali, Mumbai. Consequently, physical education was
his professional focus. He served as teacher in the Marwadi Commercial
High School and Junior College in Mumbai for over 31 years.
Subsequently, he retired as Vice Principal from that institution.
Fortunately, during the same period, he got the golden opportunity of
meeting the most respectable and popular yoga guru, the Founder-
Director of Kaivalyadham Yoga Institute at Lonavla - Paramapujya Swami
Kuvalyanandaji. This gave a totally different direction to Nimbalkar
guruji's existence and his entire life started revolving around Yoga. He
was impressed and attracted towards the influential and magnetic
personality of Swami Kuvalyanandaji and as a result, he immersed
himself wholeheartedly and completely facing and accomplishing the
challenging tasks at Kaivalyadham. Guruji always used to complete every
task assigned to him with great dedication, confidence, passion and total
responsibility. No wonder, within no time he became an apple of
everyone's eye at Kaivalyadham including all yoga experts and more so
Swamiji.
Swami Kuvalyananda is recognized and respected all over the globe
as the pioneer of modern scientific research in Yogashastra. Nimbalkar
guruji always admired and respected this scientific pursuit and
viewpoint of Swamiji and so continued to follow his footsteps in this
direction. Guruji beautifully linked modern medical science with ancient
yogic science. This further motivated him to propagate Yoga for health
and peace. In other words, propagating ‘Aarogyasathi Yoga’ (Amamo½`mgmR>r`moJ) became one of his principal goals in life. He had a strong urge to
reach out to more and more people to make them aware and
understand the importance of Yoga. With this intention in mind and
solid support from a few of his very close colleagues, he established the
yoga institute named Yoga Vidya Niketan (YVN) in 1974 on the
auspicious occasion of Gudi Padwa which is considered to be beginning
of New Year for Maharashtrian people.

The first Yoga centre of Yoga Vidya Niketan started in a small barrack
at Churchgate has today proliferated into a huge structure of number of
yoga centres in various localities in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, apart
from ever-growing multifarious actitivies of Yoga Vidya Niketan about
which we all are proud of! Thousands of Yoga activists, teachers and
well-wishers, inspired by Nimbalkar guruji's message of ‘Know Yoga -
Adopt Yoga - Spread Yoga’ have been working tirelessly to percolate his
mission of taking Yoga Vidya in Every Home with total devotion, passion
and dedication. This certainly can be regarded as a fruit of guruji's own
passion and loyalty towards yoga shastra.
Yoga Vidya Niketan operates via its own two main premises viz.
‘Damle Yoga Kendra’ at Matunga (W) in Mumbai and ‘Yoga Bhavan’ at
Vashi, Navi Mumbai. Yoga Bhavan at Vashi which started in the form of
merely a small hall named ‘Swami Kuvalyananda Sabhagruha’ now
stands tall and proud on the 1000 sq.m. CIDCO plot well-equipped with
lift & all other modern facilities. Today, regular yoga classes are
conducted by Yoga Vidya Niketan across various locations in Mumbai
and Navi Mumbai through-out the year. Two highly professional one-
year (part-time) Diploma Courses viz. ‘Yoga Teachers Training Course’
and ‘Yoga Therapy, Natural Living and Naturopathy Course’ are being
conducted successfully at both - Mumbai and Navi Mumbai centres for
last many years. Every year, many well-trained and dedicated yoga
teachers and naturopathists are added to the pool of thousands of
similar such teachers all across the city and outside. These in-turn
provide yoga training, yoga education and naturopathy and natural
living services with complete dedication and passion to many. The yoga
summer courses held in the month of May every year across various
centres in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai further help in propagating Yoga
Vidya in every home. So far, over 2000 participants are trained in
scientific Yoga education through these yoga summer courses. Like-wise
many short duration Yoga Courses and Workshops on subjects like
Shuddhi Kriyas, Pranayama, Surya Namaskar, Shankh Parkshalan, etc.

are held throughout the year under the able guidance of Nimbalkar
guruji.
Nimbalkar guruji has a wide range of books to his credit. Nearly 27
of his books have been published by Yoga Vidya Niketan which include
10 in Marathi, 9 in English, 3 in Hindi, 3 in Gujrati and one each in
Kannada and Tamil. His enormously rich knowledge in Yoga, ability to
make complex concepts easy and simple to understand and his way of
writing in a lucid and interesting manner have resulted in making his
books popular among masses. Over 1.5 lakh copies of his first book
‘Aarogyasathi Yoga’ (Amamo½`mgmR>r `moJ) in Marathi were sold and it won
a National Award in 1977. His book on ‘Pranayam’ (àmUm`m_) won the
state level Best Literature Award in 1984-85 while Government of India
has given a grant of Rs. 1 lakh for his book ‘Swasthya ke liye Yoga’
(ñdmñÏ` Ho$ {bE `moJ) published in 1997 in Hindi. Moreover, he has been
contributing productively as a Chief Editor of the monthly magazine of
Yoga Vidya Niketan namely ‘Yoga Varta’ (`moJdmVm©) since 1985. He has
been instrumental in films based on Yoga education for masses made by
Films Division of India and in various other countries like US, Japan and
Greece. He has taught Yoga and Meditation to thousands of yoga
seekers and practitioners across Thailand, US and Singapore. Since last
many years, he has been propagating Yoga education and creating
awareness through diverse mediums like radio, leading newspapers like
Maharashtra Times, Sakal and popular magazines like Chronicle, Blitz,
etc and through a very popular annual calendar ‘Kalnirnaya’ (H$mc{ZU©`).
Based on his principle of ‘Yoga for complete physical, mental, social
and spiritual health’, he has carefully designed the Graded Yogic Course
for the diploma students. Moreover, to make Yoga simple and easy for
a common man, he introduced Kriyas/Asanas like Shwasana Marg
Shuddhi, Marjarasana (A) and (B), Tripad Marjarasana, Shwanasana,
Bhushirasana (A) and (B) which can be learnt and performed step by
step as leading practices before mastering their traditional versions. He
is also a pioneer in introducing important concepts like Conscious and
11 Yoga Varta : July 2017
`moJdmVm©
Unconscious Differential Relaxation, Minimization of Expenditure of
Energy by resorting to Natural Breathing and slow, steady, controlled,
graceful, continuous movements in Yogasanas. Undoubtedly, he has
made remarkable contribution to the field of Yoga Shastra.
He has been never interested in awards and accolades. However, his
outstanding contribution to the domain of Yoga has always earned him
prestigious awards from all over the country. Among the innumerable
awards he has won are the most prestigious ‘Adarsha Shikshak Puraskar’
(AmXe© {ejH$ nwañH$ma) by State of Maharashtra in 1979, ‘Swami
Kuvalayananda Puraskar’ (ñdm_r Hw$dc`mZ§X nwañH$ma) in 1986, ‘Shri
Mangalsen Rishi Puraskar’ (lr_§JcgoZ F$fr nwañH$ma) awarded by
Government of India in 1994 at the Second International Yoga
Conference, ‘Navi Mumbai Ratna Puraskar’ (Zdr _w§~B© aËZ nwañH$ma)awarded by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation in 2002-03, and
the ‘Kriyashil Global Award’ ({H«$`merc ½cmo~c A°dm°S>©) by Mangeshda
Kriyayoga Foundation in 2006, to name a few. Over and above, on 30th
June 2004 he was felicitated by the former beloved and most respected
President of India late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam with the highly prestigious
National Level Award PADMASHRI (nÙlr) which was an added feather
in Nimbalkar guruji's hat.
Despite the numerous awards and accolades, our beloved guruji has
never shown even slightest traces of arrogance or egoistic conduct. He
remains the same sweet, simple, down-to-earth, ever-smiling and a great
inspirational figure to all of us. Because of this nature, he was always
supported proactively and whole heartedly by those he approached for
help including reputed personalities from medical, political and social
fields. As a token of gratitude and appreciation, felicitating all such
genuine supporters with the ‘Yogamitra Award’ (`moJ{_Ì nwañH$ma) was
guruji’s brainchild. Accordingly since 2002, this award is being given to
personalities renowned in their own sphere and who have contributed
prolifically in the effective propagation of yoga. This award usually given
on the graduation day of Diploma in Yoga Teachers Training Course. To
Yoga Varta : July 2017 12
`moJdmVm©
make this award more inspirational, it was rightly renamed as the
‘Padmashri Sadashiv Nimbalkar Yogamitra Award’ (nÙlr gXm{edqZ~miH$a `moJ{_Ì nwañH$ma) in 2013. To express gratitude towards those Yoga
Teachers and activists of Yoga Vidya Niketan who have been working
ceaselessly over a long period of time in the institution with complete
dedication, guruji announced the ‘Award for Lifetime Achievement in
Yoga’ (`moJ OrdZJm¡ad nwañH$ma) since 2013.
The success story of Yoga Vidya Niketan is incomplete without the
mention of highly learned, equally talented, energetic and inspirational
personality – Shakuntala Tai Nimbalkar who has been a strong support
in all the endeavours of Nimbalkar Guruji. Undoubtedly, Yoga Vidya
Niketan today is the outcome of their learned vision and dedicated
efforts. In addition to her, it is the love, dedication, sincere efforts and
good wishes of thousands of yoga teachers, yoga seekers and
practitioners that Yoga Vidya Niketan has created a niche’ in the arena
of Yoga. Having lived the aphorism ‘Simple Living and High Thinking’ to
the core, Nimbalkar Guruji even today is making ambitious plans for
improvement in the syllabus of Yogic Shuddhi Kriyas, Pranayama and
Meditation practices and thinking about better and effective ways to
deliver Yoga and Naturopathy treatments to the most marginalized
sections of the population.
We all feel extremely proud of our ‘Yogic Saint Padmashri
Nimbalkar’ (g§V`moJr nÙlr qZ~miH$a JwéOr) and salute him for his
incomparable contribution to Yoga Shastra. May God Bless our beloved
Guruji and Shakuntala Madam with a very long, happy, healthy and
peaceful life!

EGO THUS GOT SHATTERED
Ego is the first thing with which a person gets
entangled right from one's inception. A newly-born
baby gets its specific name from parents and thereafter
the said child is known everywhere by that name. Thus,
the child's 'I'ness begins and over a period, flourishes
with the name given to it. Once the ego of 'I'ness gets
stuck, rarely a person can get rid of it easily. Whenever a good thing is
done, such a person feels that only he could do that thing and no other
can do it like him. Due to this element of ego, he then loves to always
attach his name to that work. When his name gathers reputation, such
a person feels very happy, proud and usually starts harbouring the
feeling of having accomplished the cherished goal. As against such
egoistic persons, we do sometimes witness few simple and contented
individuals who even after doing very good, useful work never come
forward to take credit thereof. The ego, 'I'ness of such persons is usually
minimal.
Samrat Ramaraja, the Monarch of Tanjavur, was a well-known
devotee of Lord Shiva. He was very much proud of his devotion. This
pride slowly got turned into hard-core ego. He started believing that
there was no other Shiva-Devotee like him. He built one very imposing
and beautiful temple of Lord Shiva in his state. Everyone was astonished
to see that temple. Not only ordinary subject of Tanjavur but also
Monarchs, Kings as well as sculptors from the adjoining states got
spellbound on seeing the said temple. Everyone admitted that they had
Yoga Varta : July 2017 14
`moJdmVm©
not seen such a Shiva Temple anywhere else. This made Samrat
Ramaraja althemore happy. He started feeling proud of himself. This
further boosted his ego. He then started earnestly believing that there
was none else in this world who could match his glory, valour and
devotion towards Lord Shiva. He, therefore, named that temple as
'Rajarajeshwar Shiva Mandir' and got his name i.e. 'Samrat Ramaraja'
inscribed on the temple's wall as the creator of the said temple. On one
day, he formally inaugurated the temple by organising a grand function
therefor. People present for the inaugural ceremony loudly applauded
and praised Samrat Ramaraja. Due to self-praise, Samrat became very
much happy. On that night, he got deep, sound sleep as he felt having
accomplished his cherished goal.
In early morning sleep, Samrat had a disturbing dream in which he saw
Lord Shiva himself erasing Samrat's name from the wall of the temple and
inscribing in its place the name of Peri Vodiar, an ordinary farmer from his
Kingdom. Terribly shaken by the dream, Samrat woke-up and ordered his
solider to immediately present Peri Vodiar before him. Within a short time,
Soldiers brought Peri Vodiar to the palace and made him stand before
Samrat. Samrat asked Vodiar, ''What has you done for my Shiva Temple
that made you so dear to Lord Shiva?'' Standing before Samrat with folded
hands and trembling legs, Peri Vodiar most humbly replied, ''My Lord, I am
an ordinary poor farmer. I felt very happy when you decided to build
Shiva's temple. I also thought of contributing something for this noble
cause. I, therefore, started feeding good-quality hay to bullocks attached
to the cart carrying stones for the Shiva temple. I got indescribable
satisfaction while doing this small service for the temple. I felt very happy
to see the unique Shiva temple built by your honour.'' On hearing the
words of farmer, Samrat Ramaraja's ego got instantly demolished
into pieces. He said, "Peri Vodiar, you are certainly superior devotee than
me. Your devotion is pure, prideless and real. Hence, no wonder that
you have become the most beloved devotee of Lord Shiva!''

Speech by Mrs. Pooja Oak(Nimbalkar Guruji's Daughter)
My kids work in corporate world.
Once, after discussion with my kids
about my dear father Mr. Nimbalkar &
his Yoga Journey, I suddenly reailized
that his certain skills really make him a
'Corporation' in himself. Hence, I am
going to share those thoughts with you
today.
Mr. Nimbalkar has always been
visionary. He firmly believed in his
mission - the Mission of 'Health through Yoga for All'... and keeping it
affordable. He sincerely and earnestly believed in Yoga when Yoga was
not so popular or so-called 'cool' those days. He had very clear idea
about what he wanted to build/create and he stayed laser focused on it
without any interruptions, just like any Chief Executive Officer.
A successful Marketer does not actually do any marketing. His
employees/customers/general public do the marketing. People come to
YVN i.e. Yoga Vidya Niketan because its a great well-known place. YVN
stands for sincere, impactful, high efficacy, collaborative & happiness-
bestowing fun place. Mr. SPN with all YVN members embody these
attributes. This is impactful marketing when the user & the brand are
very nicely aligned. In that respect, I guess, he can be called Chief
Marketing Officer.
He possesses and presents tremendous ability to attract and
maintain talent. No one can deny his willingness and capacity to train
the trainees/students, and turn those students into teachers and then
teachers into ambassadors for spreading Message of Yoga. He created a

movement, he created a community just like any Head of Human
Resources.
Keeping prices of Yoga Classes and Books so low and still managing
to build a fantastic, financially strong institute is near to impossible task.
It calls for a lot of planning and thinking. He had a vision to build a big
multi-storied space devoted to Yoga for health and well-being but he
started with small building blocks to begin with. YVN never received
outside funding like startups do now e.g. no Venture Capital money was
invested in YVN. Instead, the institute called YVN grew systematically
over a period. It could manage costs and create great experience for
their students/teachers/community. Mr. Nimbalkar himself kept his own
costs very low, raised money by royalty of his books and donations
received from well-wishers. Looking to all these, he can be called Chief
Finance Officer.
This institute called YVN, of course, needs management/system of
operation. For managing logistics such as meetings, designing, initiating
new Yoga Courses, formulating different Syllabus for various courses of
Yoga and Naruropathy, etc., the other universities, institutes would have
certainly given him the title of Chief Operating Officer.
How can person who does not like to fill out paper form, dial a
phone, use computer be called Chief Technology Officer. His mission
was and is 'Yoga for All'. He used to teach Yoga to people in general. He
then wrote those lessons to fit newspaper format, then to magazines,
then he wrote books and also came on TV serials. So, as needed, he
adopted different required techniques of communicaltion & he
continued to pursue his mission. Considering this, I feel, he is a
Technology Chief.
He implemental different strategies to grow and expand his work,
his institute or should I say, 'Company'. First, he started yoga classes for
common people at various venues, classes for women, Teacher's
Training Courses, Therapy Courses, Yogic Shuddhi Kriya Workshops,
Workshops on Pranayama, Meditation, Seminars, Doctors Meets and so

on. Secondly, writing and selling books on Yoga and related subjects.
And then to expand the user base, got translated his books in different
languages. Looking to all these, I think he can be called Chief Strategy
Officer.
Foremost important is that he himself is a great Employee. He is
always 1st at all the events, functions, He is ready to move, arrange
chairs or fold carpets, He works for endless hours with great work ethics.
And last but not the least, he is a great Customer. He practices what he
preaches. He is a Dedicated Practising Yogi. He believes in natural
healing. Whether on dias or in the front row, he lookes like any other
person in YVN, not just because of the way he dresses and the way he
talks, but because he truely is a part of you, a part of all of us.
With this, on Kritadnyata Divas, I thank all those who devotedly
contributed in their own way for this wonderful Corporalion called Yoga
Vidya Niketan and furthered the noble mission of spreading Yoga to
Every Household under the inspiring leadership of my great father - Mr.
Sadashiv P. Nimbalkar!

Well organised and systematically handled by all teachers. Teachers
were very cooperative and conducted entire course very efficiently and
effectively. Thanks for valuable learning from this course.

It is a well-structured programme to suit all age groups. The course
is well designed to adopt beginner level to advanced level so that even
the elderly people can perform and try to achieve the level suitable to
their health conditions. All the teachers were good in communication
and very cordial during interactions. Actually myself and my husband
joined thinking that we may leave the course in between if we are
not able to do or not getting interested. But to our surprise, we enjoyed
the course totally and had attended all days of the training with vigour
and interest. Our health improved and we started feeling better and
happy and healthy during the course period

I attended Yoga Shibir at Bal Bharati School (Kharghar). I got to know
about this Shibir from a small advertisement from Bal Bharati School. I
was thinking for doing something like joining gym, etc. but not succeeded
to continue. This Shibir came as a survivor for me. As I know, there is
always a discipline issue with me anything which I started before.
But I thought I should try this. I heard about Yoga, also do some
Pranayama. But when I joined very first day my perception about Yoga
changed. The way all teachers started from the very first day till end of
1 month, I will wish i should continue without an end.
‘Thank You’ Yoga Vidya Niketan and all its dedicated and
knowledgeable Teachers for giving this opportunity which we can grab
and change my and others life for the better.
- Abhishek Gwali (Balbharti School, Kharghar)

It was a really good experience to join the Course which is well
designed and well planned. It allows us to go from simple to complex
yogic practises in a very easy way. Teachers were very cooperative. You
people have guided us whenever needed. You all were on toes during
the batch. Thank you all the teachers for the effort you have taken to
create love for yoga among us.
- Priti Deshpande (Yoga Bhavan, Vashi)

I am housewife living in Ghansoli. I am 62 years old, very happy to
have joined the summer yoga course. Our dedicated teachers gave us
personal attention. Because of their motivation and inspiration, I
attended ‘Suryanamaskar’ and ‘Pranayama’ workshops. I am doing yoga
regularly (everyday) at home because of their motivation and
inspiration. Thanks to all the dedicated teachers and Yoga Vidya Niketan.
