• Staging reflects the clinical extent of the tumor

• Grading a tumor reflects its histologic subtype

• Of the two, staging is the primary indicator of prognosis

• Tumors may occur spontaneously or

follow a series of cellular and tissue

changes known as epithelial dysplasia
