FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Student Success ongratulations to Dylan Wright from Year 9, who has been selected to represent NSW Country at the upcoming National Baseball
Championships for U16s to be held in January. This year NSW will take two teams to the National’s under the “Blue Sox” banner. This is a great achievement for Dylan who has been working really hard at his baseball this year. This is his second year representing NSW at a State level and we look forward to hearing of his successes at these Championships. Congratulations also to Mitchell Hannah for yet again being recognised by the UNSW for his performances in their global competitions. Mitchell has shone each year and been named the highest scoring student each year in a number of subject areas including Maths and Science. The fact that he manages to outperform Year 12 students despite not being in Year 12 at the time of the competitions is an indication of how bright this young man’s future is. Well done Mitchell. I would like to wish all our wonderful students and their families a very Happy Christmas, and if travelling away these holidays, please stay safe. I look forward to seeing you all ready for a great year of learning in 2014. Christina Bennet - Principal

FROM THE DEPUTY …MR GRADY
s the term draws to a close, the school has been recognising the outstanding achievement of our students at the Recognition Assemblies in Weeks 10 and 11. I would firstly like to congratulate all of our talented students, who have either
received awards or performed in front of their peers. The assemblies have been nothing short of fantastic and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year Advisers for their effort in coordinating these events. Well done Ms Varghese, Mrs Aldabbas, Ms Letherbarrow, Mr Montgomery and Mrs Munroe. Last week, one of our outstanding Junior Athletes, Matthew McVey, competed at the Australian All Schools Track & Field Championships in Townsville. Not only did Matthew compete well into Northern Australia, but had the responsibility of travelling on his own and managing his time before during and after the event. This alone is a great feat for a Year 7 student. Matthew’s performances were once again outstanding. He achieved a new personal best in both events and overall, came 4th in the country for U14 boy’s discus and 2nd for U14 boy’s javelin. Congratulations to Matthew on continuing to achieve personal bests through the major championships he has attended in 2013 and also for the results he has been able to achieve. I would like to wish every member of our school community, a safe and enjoyable break. I also look forward to working with the students, parents, teachers and community members in 2014 to continue to move Model Farms High School forward in delivering a quality 21st Century education to our students. Have a great week, Mark Grady

FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY Congratulations to the following students who are merit award recipients: Year 7: Ryan Anderson, Sophie Beldham-Collins, Bethany Buchs, Eliza Mae Galang,
Liam Maharaj, Matthew McVey, Atabaris Pelin and Harold Phillips Year 9: Rohan Kandan-Smith
Year 8 So You Think You Can Spell
Congratulations to the following Year 8 students who made it through as class spelling champions to the So You Think You Can Spell final: Abbey Sim, Liam Howlin, David Proctor, Peter Critchley, Matthew Stathis, Kaiden Eastough and Yara Harb. With nerves on edge, the students spelt a myriad of words with great skill and all made it through several rounds before anyone was eliminated. It came down to the wire with only two contenders remaining. Abbey and Liam, using their spectacular spelling powers, had exhausted all of Ms Greer’s spelling lists. The Oxford dictionary came to the rescue and Liam and Abbey worked their way through some very difficult words. In the end, after almost an hour of constant spelling, Abbey Sim was crowned Year 8 So You Think You Can Spell Champion. Congratulations Abbey!
YEAR 11
By now, all students in Year 11 will have received their prescribed texts for the HSC Module A: Experience through Language. They are encouraged to read these texts during the school holidays to better prepare them for starting this module at the beginning of Term 1 2014. Students also have a Practice Essay due on Thursday, 30th January, which they must submit for teacher feedback. We wish you a merrily studious Christmas, seniors!

Well done to all our students!
Gifted and Talented Presentations On Wednesday 12th of December, students who participated in the Gifted and Talented program presented their work to parents, staff and guests. The students worked very hard on their individual projects and this was evidenced by the quality of work which was presented. Mr. Anderson and I were very impressed by the standard of work and the successful running of the presentation. Students and their projects are listed below: Yr 8 Abbey Sim – A long-form fictional story involving elements of Saxon history called “Trial by Oath”. Yr 9 Sarah Murphy – Painting of the lion king using textured paints to create a three dimensional effect Garnya Sirikaewnoppakun – A painting of a Chinese dragon based on the Rose period created by Pablo Picasso. Rebecca Davis – An outfit that reflects what steam punk is Emily Duncan – A landscape of fantasy world of her own creation and sketches of the characters that live in the world along with their weapons and tattoos. A huge congratulations to all those students! I look forward to next year’s projects.

Ideas for Christmas Stocking Fillers:
School stationery and equipment can make really practical stocking fillers. Examples are: the Casio fx-82AU calculator, good quality geometry sets (can cost up to $14 at Big W, Office Works or at newsagents) or items as simple as pens and pencils, rulers, textas and colouring pencils.

Free maths tuition finished for the year: Free Maths tuition is provided every Thursday afternoon after school from 3pm to 4pm. Years 7 to 10 are in room 8-07 and Years 11 and 12 in 8-06. It is fully supervised by the Mathematics Faculty. The last day of tuition for 2013 was 5th December (which was week 9). Thursday afternoon free Mathematics tuition will recommence at the beginning of Term 1, 2014.
Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.
Fun with Maths at Christmas We would like to wish all of our students and their families very happy and safe school holidays. Don’t forget to look for the mathematics in the ‘real world’ situations that you are engaging in as a family:
Travel times, petrol usage and distances for trips in the car.
Time differences if you are travelling across time zones.
Estimating how much wrapping paper that you will need to wrap
different sized presents (and how much sticky tape you will
need!).
Calculating how much your Christmas cards and parcels will cost
to post.
When cooking with your family, remember to engage them in
measuring, estimating, capacity and volume. Also scheduling of cooking so that
everything is ready to serve at the same time.
Last week’s answer: The Pyramid: complete this pyramid so that the number in each
square is equal to the sum of the two numbers in the two squares immediately below:
