MMEA Final seminar 26.11.2015 Bio Rex, Helsinki

Driver nbr 1: Making Earth sustainable requires new solutions

Challenges Climate change Population growth & urbanization Depletion of resources (clean water,

farming land, raw materials,…) Pollution of air, water and soil Loss of biodiversity Vulnerability of ever complicating

infrastructures Need for more accurate environmental data

and tools for environmental decision making!

Driver nbr 2: Opening of data sources will accelerate development of new applications and services

"We seek a world in which open knowledge is ubiquitous and routine […] because of its potential to deliver far-reaching societal benefits:

• Better democracy: openness improves governance through increased transparency and engagement

• Better culture: openness means greater access, sharing and participation. • Better science: Science is based on building on, reusing and openly criticising the

published body of scientific knowledge. For science to effectively function, and for society to reap the full benefits from scientific endeavours, it is crucial that science data be open.

• Better economy: openness permits easier and more rapid reuse of material - open data and content are the key raw ingredients for the development of many innovative tools and services"

For example:The Open Knowledge Foundation http://www.okfn.org/

Driver nbr 3: New sensing technologies and networking of sensors enhance environmental monitoring

An example: OGC Sensor Web Concept

Driver nbr 4: Increasing computing power enables more accurate environmental modeling

Driver nbr 5: Developments in ICT will make environmental data & services ubiquitous

ICT technology enables improved ways to share environmental information (more data, faster, easier and mobile).

Implementation of standard interfaces for data delivery will make environmental observation systems interoperable.

Environmental data and services will be available for everyone, any time, any place – Ubiquitous Environmental Services will become reality.

Market pull - urgent need for more accurate environmental data and new services Technology push - rapid development in sensing technologies, modelling and ICT

=> great opportunities for new businesses!

The Measurement, Monitoring and Environmental Assessment (MMEA) program of CLEEN Oy will help in creating these new businesses by developing critical technologies and competencies.

• Succesful public-private partnership established

• Large SME participation

MMEA in numbers• Planning initiated in October 2008,

official start January 2010, ended September 2015

• Total research volume 54 M€• Tekes funding total 54 %• Industry’s research volume 52 % of

which 25 % was SME’s contribution

MMEA highlights in numbers• Master’s Thesis 26• PhD students 36• Exchange researchers 10• PhDs graduated 17• Refereed journal articles 118• Conference proceedings 195• Research Pilots 10• Technical reports 228

More highlights and findings• Several patent applications• Several spin-off companies generated• Commercialized products for global markets• New business models and partnerships• Novel best practises found to support SMEs in the process ”from

research to business”

PROVEN competetiveness in demanding market areas like in China

And utilization of the results has just started…
