Just imagine for amoment: how would youcope if a child in your
family had an illness forwhich there is no cure – acondition that would pre-vent them reaching adult-hood.
Hundreds of local families facethis challenge: these are childrenand families supported byAcorns.
Acorns provides respite, emer-gency and end-of-life care forchildren from Halesowen andacross theWest Midlands regionsat its three hospices located inSelly Oak – Birmingham,Worces-ter and Walsall.
There is also a communityteam offering 24-hour support tofamilies in their homes includingpractical and emotional supportfor parents, special help for sib-lings and bereavement coun-selling.

Acorns Selly Oak has beenoffering care and support tolife-limited children andtheir families for 19 years. The hospice is at the forefrontof children’s palliative care, asit was when it opened itsdoors in 1988 as the third inthe world.
Acorns aims to offer a vari-ety of activities that reflect theneeds and interests as well asage, gender and culture ofeach child. This can be illus-trated by our annual AfricanCaribbean Days, which
recognise the responsibilityof all staff and volunteers toprovide a culturally sensitiveand responsive service.
Acorns services are avail-able to all families with life-limited children and last yearcared for 602 families –although it is estimated that1,600 children across theWest Midlands qualify forAcorns support and thedemand for these vital ser-vices grows daily. Acorns isthe largest children’s hospicecharity in the world.
All Acorns’ services are pro-vided to families free ofcharge. But it costs £4,500 aday to run each hospice, atotal of £6m a year, and yethas to rely on fundraising andgifts for more than 80 per centof funding needs.
Acorns is supported byalmost 1,000 volunteers and250 paid staff.
Acorns is always looking forextra volunteers to help in itschain of retail shops and pro-vide help and support in thehospices.

Last year,Acorns was forced toclose 12 out of its 30 bedsclosed at its three hospices.
Families were still offered end-of-lifeand emergency care, but some fami-lies weren’t able to book respite care atthe hospice.
Respite care is a lifeline to exhaustedfamilies, giving time to recharge theirbatteries, take a short break, or spendquality time with their other children. Many older children who visit Acornsmake strong friendships – they too liketo book in to Acorns with their friendsfor a holiday.
Acorns’ staff and supporters workedincredibly hard to raise enough moneyto re-open these beds this year.
They’re working flat out to keep themopen, and maintain services that ourfamilies rely on. This is why events liketoday’s match are so important.
For more information on Acorns, itsservices and the many ways in whichyou can help, please visit:www.acorns.org.uk or call thefundraising team on 0845 120 6892.

When Acorns app-roached Halesowen TownFootball Club Ltd to host
their Charity matchagain we had no hesita-tion at all in offering theground to them.We havetried to support Acorns
wherever possible.Last year, we received
money raised from the FACharity Shield for Hale-
sowen Town FootballClub Ltd reaching the 1st
round proper of the FACup the previous season,
and split this moneybetween three local char-
ities including Acorns.
As a local football clubwe keep football in the
community.Hosting thismatch will not only raisewell deserved and neededmoney for Acorns but will
hopefully bring a newgroup of spectators,bene-
fiting Acorns and the Club.Halesowen Town FC
will continue to supportAcorns in whatever
capacity they can, no-onecan imagine what it mustbe like to have a life–lim-ited child so to know thatAcorns is available in our
community is atrue blessing.
“
”“It’s very exciting. This is a big event, and everyone is
buzzing about the town. It’s the highlight of the year, good for the community and supporters and families.”

Acorns cares for chil-dren with life-limit-ing conditions.
This means we care for childrenwho are not expected to reachadulthood, as a cure for theircondition cannot be found.
We provide respite, emergencyand end-of-life care and alsoround-the-clock communitysupport to the whole family.
We have three hospices, basedin Birmingham, Walsall andWorcester, and our communityteam covers the West Midlands,Warwickshire, Worcestershire,Herefordshire, Gloucestershireand parts of Staffordshire andShropshire.
Our hospices are designed to bea home-from-home. There areno uniforms or set routines, andthe mix of therapy, play and nurs-ing care means that children canmake the most of every day.
Teenagers are allowed space to‘be themselves’ at Walsall andWorcester hospices, which have
a dedicated adolescents’ wing. Our community team offers
round-the-clock support to thefamily. This is right from thechild’s referral to Acorns;throughout their illness, deathand beyond; and throughbereavement support; until afamily no longer needs our help.
The community team is able tohelp liaison with health, educa-
tion and social services, as well ashaving specialists working withethnic minority families, siblingsand adolescents.

Sunny-natured Imani Youngloves to swim but gets coldeasily due to circulation
problems. At eleven years old,she has already had two majorstrokes.
She is one of the children sup-ported by Acorns Children's Hos-pice, whose family is looking for-ward to Acorns’ Celebrity Foot-ball Match – aimed at supportingthe services that try to make everyday as special for the hundreds oflife-limited children in its care.
Mum Sonia will be cheering onher favourite team. She said:“We’ll be backing the AllStars.Man Utd is my team – Imani loveswatching the football.”
Imani, whose smile lights upthe room, also loves her visits toAcorns Children’s Hospice, SellyOak – particularly the hydrother-apy pool.
Imani has Sickle Cell Anaemia, which saps her energy. Thestrokes left her unable to use herleft hand and the index finger onher right hand. Imani also lostthe power of speech at the age ofeight, is tube fed and has to relyon a wheelchair to get aroundoutside the home. She also hasfour-weekly blood transfusionsto try to prevent further strokes.
However, Acorns gives her theopportunity todo things whichareotherwise impossible. The tem-perature-controlled pool at SellyOak allows Imani to spend qualitytime with her family. The water isrelaxing and the warm water aidsImani’s circulation problems.
For her mum Sonia, Acorns is alifeline, providing her with a net-work of support at the hospice
and with the African-CaribbeanLiaison Officer, Diane Thomas.
Sonia added: “When Imanigoes to Acorns, I know there arequalified nursing staff who knowImani and her needs. I trust themto make sure she enjoys her stay. But Acorns also cares for thewhole family. Diane is alwaysavailable to talk to about anyissues, to visit and to book Imanisome respite care at the hospice.”
“One of the things I worriedabout was that there was some-one who understood the needs ofAfro-Caribbean women withregard to skin and hair care.
“One day, while I was at the hos-pice, I stayed for lunch. Jerkchicken was on the menu. Icouldn’t believe the cooks wouldbe able to make a success of sucha traditional West Indian dish,
but I had to admit, it was tasty!”Like any other eleven-year-old,
Imani loves pop music, and herfavourite CDs of Lemar, JustinTimberlake and Westlife canoftenbeheardplayingaround thehospice when Imani is staying.
She also loves computers andoften spends time in the com-puter room with other children.
Sonia says: “As an only child, one of the things Imani lovesabout Acorns is it gives her anopportunity to play with otherchildren as well as doing messyarts and crafts activities, likepainting, sticking and collage.
Sonia added: “Acorns also givesme chance to have some qualitytime by myself and with friendsand family. I see Acorns as a greatblessing for disabled childrenand their families.”
