KenyanYouthtoGatheringEverythreeyearstheLCMSYouthMinistryOfficeplansandhostsaNationalYouthGatheringforyoutharoundthecountry.Theyalsoinvitealloftheirpartnerchurchesaroundtheworld.TheexperienceisrichinhelpingyoungpeopleunderstandtheirLutheranidentityandremindthemtheyarenotaloneintheirfaith.ThisyearwearethrilledtoworkwithourPartnerChurch:EvangelicalLutheranChurchofKenya(ELCK)tochaperonethreeoftheiryouthtotheLCMSYouthGatheringinJuly.TheGatheringgenerouslyoffersdiscountedregistrationfees,however,thefullamountforeachyouthwillbecloseto$3000apersonwithairfare,meals,travelwithintheUS…

TheruralKenyancongregationsthattheseyouthattendarealreadystretchedtohelppayfortheirpassport,visacosts,andallthattheyneedtobereadytotravelinternationallyforthefirsttime.

WewouldlovetobeabletotellthefamiliesandlocalcongregationsthatallotherexpenseswillbepaidthroughthegenerousheartswithintheLCMS.

MercyMedicalTeamPreparationsThereislotsofbehindthescenesworkthathappenstohostamedicalteam.KristaisblessedtoworkwithgreatteamshereinEastAfricaandinStLouis.Someoftheplanningstepsinclude:

• WorkwiththelocalchurchleadersandBishoptosetthedateayearinadvance.

• StLouisteampromotestheeventandgetsfolksregistered.PicturedaretheShort-TermTeamleaderswhoworkattheLCMSInternationalCenterinStLouis,AnneGonzalazandErinAlter.

• Sixmonthsbeforetheevent,traveltothedestinationanddoasitevisit.Thelocalchurchpicksanareaofthecountrythattheyknowneedmedicalcare,andwheretheycanmakeanimpactsharingtheGospel.

• Asiteneedstobewithinaday’sdriveoftheinternationalairport,twohoursorlessfromasafeguesthouse,inaremoteareawherehealthcareisnotavailable,aplacewherealocalchurchexitstosupporttheworkandpartnerwiththeteams,andotherstipulations.Itisimportantthatthemedicalcampcanhelppromotetheworkofthelocalchurch,butdoesnotconflictwithlocalmedicalfacilitiesalreadyinexistence.

• Duringthesitevisit,weagreewiththelocalchurchleadersandbishopaboutthebestsite,meetwiththeheadoftheMedicalOfficeintheregiontoarrangemedicalpersonal,arrangelocalhousing,transport,andalllogisticsthatneedtobehandledtopreparefortheAmericanvolunteerteamtoarrive.

InMarch,KristatraveledtoKilimanjaroRegionofTanzaniatoprepareforthemedicalteamthatwillhappeninJunewiththeLutheranChurchofEastAfrica(LCEA).InApril,shetraveledtoMasindiinnorthernUgandatomeetwiththeLutheranChurchofUganda(LCU)aboutthemedicalcampthatwillhappeninNovember.KristaworkscloselywithmissionarySarahKanoy,anurseandourfieldHealthEducatortoascertainthebestlocationsandmedicalpersonnelforthemedicalcamps.

WhileinUganda,wetraveledtofourvillages,metwiththeRegionalHealthofficer,visitedpossiblehotels,talkedwithlocalPastorsandchurchleaderstodiscernthebestsiteforthemedicalcamp.Itwasachallengetoseesomanyindesperateneed,andwepraythechurchwillcontinuetoreachouttothesecommunitieswiththehandsofJesusandHislove.
