What is sustainability?

Sustainability is the capability of satisfying people's needs without irreversibly damaging the natural resources at disposal for the future.

There are 3 different dimensions of sustainability: environmental, economic and social.

About the project• Mission into the Future (MF) draws together a community of

11 schools with a common interest in global sustainability. The large team has been exploring 3 main topics: environment, economics and society.

• Our detailed 2 year plan: - Year 1 - What are the causes and impact of global warming?

Introduction into the problems and issues surrounding global warming and exploration of renewable energy sources.

- Year 2 - What will my future role as a European citizen be? In depth study of the challenges facing each country and the political approach explored by each.

Project Objectives

• Our objectives are to enhance our students' learning through:

- a heightened sense of responsibility for a sustainable future- opportunities for friendship, cooperation and cultural understanding between

European students- improve communication and presentation skills through the extensive use of

the information and communication technologies- recognize the value of European citizens' spirit of integration and cooperation

by embracing the diversity of multi-cultural societies and socially integrating young people from different countries

- building the following attitudes: tolerance, mutual understanding and empathy - improve language skills and specialist vocabulary related to sciences,

environment, technology, arts and politics- introduce and promote cross-curricular activities

Official meeting with the local authorities , where the winners of the logo competition were announced

We visited the host school - GTS 2001, Ganztagsschule Syke - Haupt- und Realschule.

Sightseeing tour of the historical centre of Bremen

Attending a workshop where the German teacher showed us how to make a solar cooker and the way we can use it.

One of the most interesting activities we did was the visit to the Werner Stadium in Bremen. Why was it so special ? Because its roof is almost completely covered in solar panels. The energy resulted is used for the needs of a big part of the city.

Project Meeting in Drama, Greece26 – 28 February 2013

• If in Germany we dealt with the environmental dimension of sustainability, in Greece we had the first chance to get acquainted with the social and cultural dimension too.

• On the first day we visited the 6th Secondary School of Drama …

The Greek students presented their school and a detailed schedule of the meeting…

Visit to the ancient theatre of Filippoi (social-cultural sustainability) …

It was here that we began to know who is who; we had some “getting to know you” activities, all of us at the beginning and then only the students.

Visit to Alistrati Cave (ecotourism and environmental

sustainability)

On the meadow near the cave the students played the “human knot” and other funny

games which helped them know each other better.

Tour in a natural wetland of Drama – Santa Barbara (social-cultural sustainability)

Visit at the Social Solidarity Clinic of Drama (social-political sustainability)

Economic crisis in Greece is a result of a long period of political alienation. Citizens have been feeling that laws

were broken down, political decisions were unclear and unpredictable, and that they could not affect the actions of the government. Social Solidarity Clinic is a

self-organized initiative that resists to the austerity and inhuman measures imposed by the Greek government

and the IMF.

On the last day, we had outdoor activities: we enjoyed a walk on the river (Nestos) bank and we

played environmental and solidarity games.
