2 Miriam Annual Report 2011–2012
SiNce 1956 Miriam School has operated on the belief that every child possesses gifts and abilities that can be strengthened within the appropriate educational environment. The school program is designed for 96 children in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade who have learning, speech/language, sensory/motor and attention disabilities, but who also operate at average to above-average intelligence levels.
Through a team approach, small class size and specialized instruction, Miriam School provides a variety of accommodations and curriculum modifications designed to meet the academic needs and support the social skills development of each child. Each day at Miriam School children learn to look inside themselves, discover how they best learn, and unlock their own unique talents. When they leave Miriam they are prepared to create their own successes in education and in life.
Miriam School encourages children with complex learning disabilities to recognize and successfully meet their potential.
Miriam Annual Report 2011–2012 3
Miriam Learning Center improves the lives of children with complex challenges and their families through comprehensive psychological and educational services and specialized therapies.
MiRiAM LeARNiNg ceNteR (MLc) opened in 2007 as a resource for students, ages three through 18, who can remain in their current educational environment but need specialized support because of difficulties related to speech, listening, reading, math, sensory or motor skills as well as other challenges such as an autism spectrum disorder.
Through after school, Saturday, summer, and outreach programs, MLC serves over 300 children each year. The MLC staff of trained and certified specialist provides diagnostic testing and evaluation, occupational and speech therapies, and tutoring in a single location. For families, that means simplifying services without compromising quality, and ensuring that their child receives the individualized attention that can make a real difference in learning and growing academically, socially and emotionally.
As we prepAre for the exciting transition to high school, I know in my heart that the many choices in front of us are all because of the eight life changing years behind us here at Miriam. The self-assured, confident, loving son I have today, is in large part because of the love, guidance, and support of the Miriam family.”
4 Miriam Annual Report 2011–2012
The Miriam Switching Post is where antique dealers shop to find vintage mahogany, primitives and collectibles, where decorators bring their clients to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces, and where students furnish an entire apartment for pennies on the dollar. With more than 60 years of history, Miriam Switching Post in Maplewood is one of St. Louis’ oldest resale stores. The shop accepts donations of gently used furniture and other household items and also provides empty out services for households in transition. The Switching Post contributes all its proceeds to Miriam Foundation – nearly $400,000 in 2011-12 – and depends heavily on its stalwart staff of volunteers who range in age from 10 to 85 years old.
