For your day visit at
At Minstead we try to save on waste, and work with the three R’s in mind:
Reduce, reuse and recycle
Our recycling bins are fed with what they like: paper, plastics and metals and our compost
heaps are well fed with organic materials.
Children don’t always listen to what adults say, but they do usually notice what adults do.
And children always remember what they do for themselves. So, at Minstead everybody is
encouraged to save on waste….
When children visit for the day and bring a packed lunch we like everything that comes out
of the lunch box to go into a tummy or back in the box. Often there is so much wrapping
that the boxes are better fed than the tummy, and all those wrappings will go to a landfill
site. Just imagine the size of the hole needed for the waste from one class.
Perhaps your children could reduce the waste in their lunch boxes, here are some simple
suggestions to get you started:
Use a plastic lunch box which can be reused everyday, inside have a box for sandwiches and
one for cake or peeled vegetables. Save on packaging by splitting large packet into small
portions. Fresh fruit comes with its own recyclable skin. Put drinks into reusable bottles.
Things to avoid: clingfilm, sandwich bags, crisp packets and biscuit wrappers – they are not
suitable for recycling.
Please try to make your Minstead day packed lunches waste free and
good to eat

First a HUGE thanks for helping us and the children on this trip.
Whilst this trip is predominantly about providing our children with new experiences and enjoyment,
we have worked very hard to link the trip to work we are doing in school and which we will carry on
after the trip. To help us with this we would like to ask you for your help supporting the children’s
learning.
Some background
Minstead is an exciting environment in which children are able to see their sustainability learning
come to life.
They will be exposed to some of the biodiversity that exists around them both here and abroad
and start to understand the importance of different creatures
visit an organic garden, maybe sampling some of the plants
help build compost from recycled food and paper, understanding the impact of how we
nourish the soil
see how alternative forms of energy may be used to assist saving our energy resources
be shown how their day to day living has a longer term impact on the environment
see sheep and chickens in a free range environment with a chance to feed them and
understand their needs
share their learning in a wide variety of ways and environments, including a tepee,
wooden seating circle and roundhouse
All this will take place in ways that are exciting, informative, creative, engaging and encourage them
to use all their senses. A balanced view will be given, whilst highlighting the importance of
sustainability.

How you can help
Whilst walking around Minstead encourage the children to fully experience the different
types of environment offered to them and talk about what they see.
Talk about the difference between Minstead, their school and home.
Ask them for ideas about why they are there to link back to work in the classroom.
Encourage the children to use all their senses – hearing, smell, touch, vision and even taste
where appropriate!!
Talk to the children about their thoughts and feelings after each of the activities.
Draw out their ideas by asking open questions such as... How do you feel about..?... How
would you see this affecting your future?... What are your ideas of how to make things
sustainable?
Encourage the children to discuss their ideas in pairs or groups.
Ask the children to think about the situation from different points of view, e.g. farmers,
energy suppliers etc.
If the children wish to, allow them to record their thoughts in photographs, writing, using
tape recorders or in pictures.
Above all keep the children talking, thinking and using all their senses.
Thank you

Help for coach drivers
Minstead Study Centre, School Lane, Minstead, Lyndhurst, Hampshire, SO43 7GJ t. 023 8081 3437 e. minstead.sc@hants.gov.uk w. www.minstead.hampshire.org.uk
Access to Minstead Study Centre is not very easy for coaches. The approach is along
narrow country lanes and there is only limited space for dropping off and picking up.
A 36 seater vehicle is ideal.
How to find us:
Approach from the M27 Travelling in a westerly direction continue along onto the A31 and take the Minstead
turning off the A31 on the brow of the hill.
Passing the village hall on your right take the second turning on the right signposted
Study Centre.
Approach from A337 between Lyndhurst and Cadnam. From Lyndhurst continue along the A337 turning left at the first sign to Minstead.
Continue for one mile on narrow road to Minstead village centre.
Turn left immediately after the Trusty Servant pub, the turning opposite the telephone
box, signpost Study Centre.
Follow the road down to the ford. The Study Centre is the red brick Victorian
School on the right.
Stop on the ford and reverse up to the front gates parking close to the hedge
and allowing safe drop off at the entrance.
After dropping off your passengers you will need to leave the area. The
nearest coach park is in Lyndhurst.
Please return to collect your passengers at or slightly before the agreed time.
Our neighbours are understanding of the difficulties of bringing coaches to the Study
Centre but please do not stop on verges or the private gravelled area on the left as
you approach the ford.
Day Visits with Mini Buses:
It is possible to park a minibus on the school yard on occasions, please liaise with the centre
staff before coming if this is your intention. We can not always accommodate minibuses so
it is very important we know this is your intention before you arrive.
We hope you find this information useful and our thanks to those of you who have brought
children to Minstead Study Centre before.
