About MindMaps for Visio
The MindMaps for Visio add-in was created to extend the brainstorming functionality

creates or opens a diagram based on Visio’s build-in brainstorming template.
System Requirements
- Microsoft Visio 2010 or 2013
- Microsoft Visio 2010 or 2013 Professional for the mind mapping rules validation
- .NET Framework 4

Features (Standard Edition)
Auto-Connect Legend Shapes
If an annotation shape from the “Legend Shapes“ stencil is dropped or moved on a
topic shape it will be connected to the topic shape automatically. It now moves along
when topic shape is moved.
Left: An idea shape is dropped on a main-topic shape.
Right: The idea shape is now connected to the main-topic shape and moves along when
the main-topic is moved. The idea shape can be freely positioned relative to the main-
topic.
To replicate this behavior without MindMaps for Visio the user would have to move
the legend shape’s control point manually to a connection point of the topic shape.
The brainstorming template comes with 23 different legend shapes.
The brainstorming template’s “Legend Shapes” stencil.

To add a new sub-topic select a topic or main-topic shape and press ENTER.
To add a new peer-topic select a topic shape and press BACKSPACE. If you select a
main-topic the peer-topic will also be a main-topic.
Top left: Pressing ENTER on an empty page will add the first main-topic shape.
Top right: Pressing ENTER while selecting the main-topic will add the first sub-topic to
the main-topic.
Bottom left: Pressing ENTER again while selecting the sub-topic will add further sub-
topics.
Bottom right: Pressing BACKSPACE while selecting the first the sub-topic will add peer-
topics to the sub-topic.

Drag & Drop Topics
New sub-topics can be added by dragging the master shape from the “Brainstorming
Shapes” stencil and dropping it on an existing topic or main-topic shape. The new
topic will be added as a sub-topic automatically.
Left: Dropping a topic shape on a main-topic shape.
Right: The topic was automatically added as a sub-topic to the main-topic.

Moving an existing topic shape on another topic will make the first shape’s branch a
sub-branch of the second shape.

Circular Layout
Topic shapes are arranged in a circular pattern starting at the one o’clock position
and automatically increased radius with every full rotation. Sub-topic shapes are
positioned on a half circle in the current layout direction. Connections are only made
to the left and right sides of the topic shapes, not all around the shapes.

Rich Text Notes
The editor window can be used to add rich text notes and links to local files to all
shapes and pages. It also offers a fast and easy way to edit the shape’s text. The
editor offers a standard range of formatting options. Spellchecking can be optionally
activated.

Full compatibility
Brain storming diagrams created without MindMaps for Visio are fully compatible and
editing can continue seamlessly after the installation of MindMaps for Visio.
Mind maps created with the help of MindMaps for Visio can be opened and edited by
users without the add-in. Merely the rich text notes of the shapes cannot be viewed
or edited by these users.

Multi-Language Support
The add-in adjusts its user-interface in accordance to the language of the operating
system. The currently supported languages are English and German.
Extended Word Export
Exporting the mind map to Microsoft Word will generate an elaborate document
containing an image of the diagram and the data of all shapes. This contains the rich
texts, the hyperlinks, data of associated annotations and relationships between the
topics.
Style & Color Inheritance
The Visio brainstorming template offers 7 different styles that can be applied to the
topic shapes via the “Diagram Style” option on the “BRAINSTORMING” ribbon tab.
Choosing a style will only affect shapes in the diagram. When additional topics are
added they will be set to the default style. Activating the MindMaps for Visio “Shape
Inheritance” feature will automatically set the style of newly added sub-topics to the
same style as the topic or main-topic they are added to.
Microsoft Visio offers a variety of color themes, called “Shape Styles” on the “HOME”
ribbon tab that allow the user to quickly change the look and feel of the mind map.
Again the selected style will only affect present shapes. Activating the MindMaps for
Visio “Color Inheritance” feature will automatically set the style of newly added sub-
topics to the same style as the topic or main-topic they are added to.
Left: Adding a sub-topic shape to a main-topic shape will give it the default design.
Right: Changing the color theme of the main-topic shape and activating the MindMaps for
Visio “Color Inheritance” and “Shape Inheritance” features will make the next topic shape
automatically look like the main-topic shape.

Path & Branch Selection
With a single click a full path starting at the currently selected topic and ending at the
main-topic or all the sub-topics of the currently selected topic can be selected,
creating an easy way to apply color and font styles to a whole branch within your
mind map.

Middle: After selecting “Topic 9” and clicking the “Select Path” button on the MindMaps
for Visio ribbon tab the path to the main-topic is selected.
Bottom: Using the build-in Visio “Shape Styles” menu a single click changes the theme of
all selected shapes.

Mind Mapping Rules Validation
Using the integrated rule validation engine mind mapping rules can be checked via
the ribbon menu. These rules include checking the number of main-topics, checking
for unconnected shapes, for topics lacking text or connections having text.
While the “Restrict Main Topics” button is active it is not possible to add more than
one main-topic to each page of the document.
Above: After clicking the “Validate” button on the MindMaps for Visio ribbon tab the
“ISSUES” window opens and displays a list of validation errors on the current page.
Import
The import feature helps you to migrate from other Mind Mapping software. Simply
import the Mind Map structure of Mindjet (save as *.xmmap), FreeMind (save as
*.mm) or XMind (export to FreeMind as *.mm) files.

Features (Professional Edition)
SharePoint Website & List Creation
Simply design your new SharePoint site structure as an intuitive mind map. Easily add
lists and libraries. When you are finished the structure is automatically created on
your SharePoint server with the push of a button - instantly ready for you and your
team. Comprehensive SharePoint knowledge is not required. Both, local installations
of SharePoint and Microsoft’s SharePoint Online service, are supported.
Activating the SharePoint Design Mode on the MindMaps for Visio ribbon tab will
display additional SharePoint properties in the editor window.
The main topic of your mind map now becomes the entry point for creating website
structures on your SharePoint server. Every subtopic will become a website and every
legend connected to a topic will become a list or library.
The text of a shape is used as the website or list title. You can not only enter a
description but also choose the templates that are used to create websites and lists.
For a website you can also select a language. Please note that only languages
installed on your SharePoint server will allow the creation of new websites.
Using the import feature you can read your existing SharePoint structure and
continue editing it at any time. For technical reasons you cannot change the template
and language settings of existing websites and lists.
MindMaps for Visio can be used to create and edit structures only. For security
reasons no objects are deleted from your SharePoint server, even if you delete
elements from the corresponding mind map.

Summary
All described features support the user in the faster creation of correct mind maps
while not restricting him or her by forcing the creation of a valid diagram or disabling
parts of the existing Visio brainstorming functionalities.
The Professional Edition of MindMaps for Visio gives you a powerful and simple tool to
administrate your SharePoint Website structure in no time at all.
