Together, we have made history.
Thanks to the incredible commitment, dedication and generosity of each of you, our donors,
we successfully completed our historic $1.3 billion Discoveries that Make a Difference Campaign.
The pictures that you will see in the pages of this book are a testament to the accomplishments
that were only possible through your support.
The outpouring of your generosity was truly remarkable; an impressive 150 donors made gifts of
$1 million or more to the campaign. Each and every gift we received was a stepping stone to building
a more comprehensive, multidisciplinary research center; every donation brought us one step closer
to recruiting more top-tier physician scientists; every dollar, one more step toward delivering the finest
patient care; and every contribution, critical support for our medical students – some of the best
and brightest in the country. These milestones were each important and inspirational, and happened
because of you.
In this book, you will see the state-of-the-art Belfer Research Building that you helped to build. You will
see hardworking medical students like those who you supported. And, you will see the faces of those
who, thanks to you, we continue to help every day – our patients. Protecting their health, and the
health of future generations, is our ongoing driving force.
These images tell the story of the impact of the Discoveries Campaign on Weill Cornell Medical College,
but more important, they tell the story written by you, our donors. It is only with your help and
generosity that this story could have been told.
Thank you for keeping Weill Cornell on the frontlines of science and healthcare for generations to come.
With gratitude,
Robert J. AppelChairman, Discoveries that Make a Difference CampaignVice Chair, Board of Overseers

the belfer research building stands on 69th Street as a towering monument to our donors, 35 of whom generously gave $1 million or more, funding this state-of-the-art research space. Opening in early 2014, the building will be filled with world-class physician-scientists working together in a collaborative environment to speed breakthrough treatments to our patients.
the Starr Foundation-maurice r. Greenberg conference center and its iconic skylight terrace, pictured, is a place where physician-scientists, educators, students and scientific experts from Weill cornell and across the globe will meet, share ideas and collaborate on the latest discoveries and research breakthroughs.
teaching the next generation of doctors is a responsibility that is taken seriously at the medical college, and we have great pride in the quality of a Weill cornell education. Support for our faculty was strong under the Discoveries campaign and our exceptional instructors bring out the best in our students. Here, Debra taubel, m.D., associate professor of clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology, teaches a seminar.
the Discoveries campaign raised a staggering $31 million in scholarship, far surpassing our $20 million goal. because of the support of our donors, Weill cornell students, the future leaders in healthcare, are able to focus on their education rather than their finances. Here, students in the margaret and ian Smith clinical Skills center practice resuscitation skills.
Weill cornell physicians provide caring and personal clinical care with individualized attention given to each patient. the Discoveries campaign has continued Weill cornell’s tradition of placing the patient at the center of everything we do. Orli etingin, m.D., lisa and Sanford b. ehrenkranz professor of Women’s Health and Director of the iris cantor Women’s Health center, consults with a patient.
Weill cornell’s excellence in clinical care extends to all departments, and providing comprehensive care to children can affect health outcomes for generations to come. Stefan Worgall, ph.D., m.D., Distinguished associate professor of pediatric pulmonology, chief, Division of pediatric pulmonology, allergy and immunology, sees a young patient in his office.
advances in research have led to breakthroughs in neurodegenerative diseases that could not have happened without the support of our donors, examples being the establishment of the Helen and robert appel alzheimer’s Disease research institute in 2006 and the Feil Family brain and mind research institute in 2012. costantino iadecola, m.D., Director of the Feil Family brain and mind research institute, the anne parrish titzell professor of Neurology and professor of Neuroscience, with a scientist in his lab in the Gertrude and louis Feil Family research building.
a priority on recruitment has allowed us to attract scientists like paraskevi Giannakakou, ph.D., pictured here collaborating with her lab team. Dr. Giannakakou is a Discoveries recruit who is the Director of laboratory research for the Division of Hematology and medical Oncology.

An energy and urgency infuse the Driving Discoveries, Changing Lives Campaign. At its core is a vision
of physician-scientists working together with one central goal in mind: speeding breakthrough
treatments and cures to our patients. With the opening of the Belfer Research Building only months
away, we know that we are the right place and that this is the right time for Weill Cornell to be
at the center of a transformation in medicine.
Each element of this campaign – recruiting more leading lights to our campus, enhancing our already
strong medical education curriculum, and accelerating our current research efforts – is a critical and
exciting step toward changing the lives of those who receive our care.
With this campaign, Weill Cornell will build on its track record of unprecedented growth. We are
perfectly poised to usher in an era of personalized and ‘tailored’ medicine. We must keep our students
on the frontlines of medical discoveries and patient care, and provide our faculty with the best
opportunities and resources possible.
The Driving Discoveries, Changing Lives Campaign will catalyze the next phase of healthcare and
medicine. As we look toward the future, there are myriad opportunities on the horizon. The following
pages provide a snapshot of our current efforts, but the possibilities are endless.
Sincerely,
Laurie H. Glimcher, M.D.Stephen and Suzanne Weiss DeanProvost for Medical Affairs, Cornell University

top-tier scientists build top-tier research programs. the successful Discoveries that Make a Difference campaign brought us leading lights including ari melnick, m.D., Gebroe Family professor of Hematology/Oncology, and lewis c. cantley, ph.D., margaret and Herman Sokol professor in Oncology research and Director of the cancer center at Weill cornell. The Driving Discoveries, Changing Lives campaign will continue this trend of bringing the best and brightest minds to our campus to lead Weill cornell into a new era of medical breakthroughs.
precision medicine, a key focus in the Driving Discoveries, Changing Lives campaign, is one of the most exciting concepts in healthcare today. individualized care speeds recovery and allows doctors and patients to manage health concerns from the inside out. Here, a scientist reviews a slide of DNa which will be put into a sequencer and analyzed, allowing him to determine specific genetic factors that will affect treatment.
personally tailored medicine will completely change the face of modern healthcare – drastically altering the way we treat diseases across all areas including cancer, cardiovascular disease and neurological disorders. a state-of-the-art computing framework is required to run complex algorithms that analyze each patient’s genome to create the best possible plan for care.
today’s medical students benefit from an innovative, engaging and interactive classroom environment that incorporates the newest technologies. Dean Glimcher and the Weill cornell senior faculty are working together to address these needs by enhancing our already strong curriculum and better preparing our students for the future.
Student scholarship enables us to keep the most talented minds on campus and allows those students to pursue the specialties they choose without fear of debt. Gifts to support scholarship can impact future career opportunities for many of our most promising students.
The Driving Discoveries, Changing Lives campaign will impact our future and the futures of those who come after us. Now is the time to make a mark on our legacy of research, education and patient care.
