Golf clinics, junior events, fun play, and tournaments… golf facilities in the MAPGA are finally getting underway with their golf activities. The MAPGA Section Board and staff wish you a very
successful 2014 golf season!
I I I I know May is a busy month
for all of us at our facilities, but I challenge each of you to spend at least two hours a week on player development and growing the game. This can be done at your facility through simply giving a beginner a lesson, providing Get Golf Ready clinics or
junior golf programs. On a Section level, you can donate your time to help out at Paul Berry’s “Get Hooked on Golf” clinics, a Wounded Warrior clinic, volunteer at a Boys and Girls Club, be an instructor in a golf in schools program, work with the First Tee in your area or find a local business and start beginner golf classes for them. Please take time to grow this great game of golf!
It’s as simple as that.

The Officers and your Executive Director recently attended the PGA’s Southern Super Regional Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. We were joined by the rest of District 10 (Carolinas, Kentucky), District 3 (Dixie, Tennessee,
Gulf Coast), District 13 (Georgia, North Florida and South Florida) and the Illinois Section. The purpose of this two day meeting was to meet the three candidates running for National Secretary. The candidates are Michael Haywood, PGA, Russ Libby, PGA and Suzy Whaley, PGA. The two days consisted of a 10 minute one on one meeting with each Candidate by Section, 45 minute candidate presentations, District Q & A meeting and finally a candidate debate. Each candidate did a great job over the two days and I was very impressed with all of
them.

President’s Perspective cont.
Since we have seven months until the election, the MAPGA officers really focused on trying to
get to know each candidate personally. They all bring different qualities to the table. One is a
facility owner, one has been a Director of Golf for over 20 years and the other is a leader in
player development, playing, and teaching. All the candidates have a great deal of past
leadership experience with service on their chapter, Section, or National Board of Directors.
Michael and Suzy have served on the National Board and Russ has served on the National
Board of Control. All the candidates have served on many National PGA Committees. Each
focused on Player Development/Growth of the Game, PGA Properties, Employment,
Education and Section Affairs. The next seven months leading up to the November election
will be exciting. I invite any of you to call your officers to give your insight on any of the
candidates.
Let’s tee it forward and grow this great game of golf. Have a great season!

TTTThis past Wednesday, on
Capitol Hill, the MAPGA was
proud to serve as part of WE
ARE GOLF at National Golf
Day. MAPGA Professionals
John Madden, Lynne Hunter,
Mike Thomas, Trish Gates,
Tim Krebs, Janet Ortega as
well as Section staff Steph
Jennings, Bob Heintz and I
were on hand to provide
instruction at the Cannon
Building. As part of WE ARE
GOLF, we stressed how
important Golf is as an
Industry in terms of economic
impact and environmental
issues. We also focused on
the human side of golf,
sharing personal and industry
anecdotes about how golf
puts food on our tables, helps
charities and employs so
many people.
Why do we do this every year? Why do we do this every year? Why do we do this every year? Why do we do this every year?
Golf still has a not-deserved
bad reputation in Washington
due to the bad actions of a few
( i n c l u d i n g e l e c t e d
representatives). Many tax
relief bills are still copied from
the infamous Katrina bill that
excluded three business types
from tax relief due to that
natural disaster: tattoo parlors,
casinos and golf courses. We
must continue to be diligent
and make sure our legislators
understand that our business
is bigger than the motion
picture industry and should be
treated accordingly.

-The tournament season is
kicking into full gear. Chapter
Championships (supported by
Page & Tuttle) are Tuesday
(Northern & Central) and June
2nd (Southern). These events
will also serve as qualifiers for
the Delta Dental State Open of
Virginia, which will be a 3 day
event this year, held on July 17
-19 at the lovely Ballyhack Golf
Club in Roanoke.
-Our Section Pro-Scratch has
always been one of our most
popular events. This year, due
to a national sponsorship with
National Car Rental (NCR), we
will have two of these events,
each with $7500 added from
NCR. The first one is June 9th
at the Homestead, so please
register now. NCR will
determine success by the
number of people registered
into its loyalty program, the
Emerald Club. Members of the
Emerald Club who are playing
in the event will also be eligible
for increased prizing.

Eyes on Employment: Taking Care of Your Staff
Taking Care of Your StaffTaking Care of Your StaffTaking Care of Your StaffTaking Care of Your Staff
With the arrival of spring / summer season in our area, PGA Professionals and their staff members are filled with enthusiasm in anticipation of the upcoming season . However, as activity levels increase and everyone settles into their daily work routine, it can become easy to take your personnel for g ranted. Without proper direction and guidance, even your best staff members may lose interest and motivation as the months go by. By the end of the year, they may be actively looking for another job, leaving you
wondering what went wrong.
If your employees would answer “NO” to a number of these questions, you may be subject to frequent staff turnover regardless of the quality of your facility. It’s important to note that none of the above items deals with compensation. According to many employee s a t i s f a c t i o n s u r v e y s , compensation falls well down the list of priorities when employees are asked what factors help them enjoy their job. Naturally, if you have an outstanding employee who is being paid well below their market value, you may likely lose them at some point regardless of their loyalty. However, you can increase your chances of employee retention by making sure the components are in place for a successful e m p l o y e r - e m p l o y e e
relationship.

“Some facilities report as much as
25% of their annual club sales
coming on (Demo Day).” -
Mike Aldrich, PGA
Player Development Discussion: Demo Days that Drive Golfers & Revenue
WWWWhat possible reason could
there be for offering hours of
free services? Your time is
stretched, your staff is lean,
so why are you going to take
members of the staff out of
the operation for a day? To
consider putting such a strain
on your operation, they should
really be creating money for
themselves, the facility, or
both!
Almost every course holds at
least one DEMO DAY, where
staff members are pulled out
of regular golf operation to fit
and consult with golfers about
the offerings of various
manufacturers. Of course,
the day would be a waste of
time and resources if it didn’t
end with significant income
for the club. Some facilities
report as much as 25% of
their annual club sales coming
on that single day.
What about creating a “Demo
Day” for your efforts in
instruction? Create a fun
a t m o s p h e r e w i t h
demonstrations of your
offerings for all ages and skill
levels of golfers. Have fun
activities for the kids; you
could borrow GolfZilla from the
Section, decorate white socks
for custom head covers, or
create your own Drive, Chip &
Putt competition. On another
day, offer mini-physical
screens, bring out that
expensive video and launch
monitor and provide a bit of
analysis for your advanced
golfers. For inexperienced
golfers, host a “Welcome to
Golf” reception with appetizers
and, in the clubhouse, give
tours of the golf operation as a
preview of Get Golf Ready.
Beyond creating quality
experiences for both beginner
and avid golfers, the key is
turning the experience into a
“sale.” At the end of a fitting/
consultation at a golf
equipment demo day, you
would provide a price and
ask for the sale. During an
instructional demo day, have
your offerings listed and be
ready to accept registrations
and payment.
Many of the successful pros
in the MAPGA run multiple
Player Development events
to promote their Lessons and
Instruction Programs. These
events can create enough
interest to fill their offerings
for the season. Some

Legislative Victory for Golf Course Owners
Conservation Easement Tax
Incentive Eligibility Change!
TTTThe We Are Golf (WAG) coalition,
of which the NGCOA is a founding member, scored a significant v ictory recent ly when i t successfully reversed an effort within the Senate Finance
Committee to specifically exclude golf courses from conservation
easement tax incentive eligibility.
The NGCOA encou raged members in key states to act on
behalf of this change. Forbes-Tate, We Are Golf's Washington, D.C.-based advocacy firm, led an effort that was supported by several WAG member organizations, including the NGCOA, to convince key members of the Senate Finance Committee to include golf courses among land uses eligible for conservation easement tax incentives. WAG will continue to remain vigilant with both the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee to ensure that golf courses remain eligible for conservation easement tax
incentives.
While WAG was successful in this instance, much work remains to ensure that golf courses retain their conservation easement tax
incentive eligibility.

Central Chapter Update by President Josh Tremblay, PGA
I I I I was encouraged by the strong showing by the Central Chapter at
Belmont Country Club on March 31st. Thanks to Bob Pfeffer, PGA and his staff for hosting the event and also a special thanks to Mike Aldrich, PGA; Michael Leemhuis, PGA; Mike Pius, PGA; Matt Gallagher, PGa; Jay Dufty, PGA; Jim Fitzgerald, PGA; and John Lyberger, PGA for the great breakout sessions. I received a lot of positive feedback on the meeting experience and feel that we, the Board, achieved our goal of making the meeting more valuable to
the professionals of the Central Chapter. Let’s keep this participation momentum going all season at events like the Central Chapter Championship (May 27th at Piedmont), the Central Chapter Pro-Am (June 2nd at Stoneleigh), Pro-Junior (June 30th at CC of Fairfax),
and the Fall Meeting and Pro-Assistant (Sept. 8th at Army Navy CC—Arlington).
I’d like to share a best practice idea with you to help make you more valuable to your members, clients, and students. Something that many of you are probably doing already is to organize golf trips for your members and be their “host professional” on the trip. I have tried to plan one trip per year to a golf destination. While at Springfield, I have taken members to Bay Hill, TPC Sawgrass, Bedford Springs Resort, Bandon Dunes Resort, and the courses in Kohler, WI (Whistling Straits; Blackwolf Run). I’ve taken it a step further and given each member a detailed itinerary, planned meals, organized pairings, and competitions. In addition to some of the common sense stuff like making yourself available for lessons on the trip, making sure you play with everyone at least once, I have also tried to commemorate the trip. At each destination, I purchase a flag and get everyone onn the trip to sign it. Then, I frame it using a shadowbox to feature the flag, a group photo, and a couple pictures of the course. These shadowboxes are hung outside the golf shop and the members enjoy looking at them and showing them to guests. Even members who haven’t gone on the trips take pride inn the fact that our club and their golf
pro does this.
Many of you are probably saying “I wish I had the time to do this or could afford it.” A lot of these trips can be done during our slow season or possibly during aerification at your facility. I build the cost of my airfare into the price I advertise to the members and the resorts or travel companies I work with will usually take care of your accommodations and golf if you bring at least seven golfers. Premier Golf is a company I have worked with on multiple trips and in addition to covering my costs, they also contribute to PGA’s Golf Retirement Plus. The next member trip at Springfield will most likely be to Streamsong Resort in Florida in January/February 2015. You cannot find a better way to really bond with your members than by playing golf with them and it only resonates more when you do
it over several days at a great destination.
