What is a fraction? And some vocab.

A fraction is part of a whole. Vocabulary

Some examples of fractions

½- proper fraction 2 ¼ - mixed number 2/4 – proper fraction- equivalent 4/3 – improper fraction 3/3- this equals 1 whole

What to do when adding fractions

Adding or subtracting fractions is adding to and taking away from the same whole.

So ….. You cannot add or subtract fractions with different denominators.

You make sure that the fraction has a common denominator, and then you can add the numerators.

When adding fractions you do not add denominators.

Some examples

¼ + 2/4 = ¾ ½ + ¾ = 5/4 = 1 ¼ 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 1/3 + 1/6 = 3/6 = ½
