Honors 499: The World is Our Neighborhood // Fall 2015

The Truth About Stigma1 in 4 people worldwide will experience mental illness at some point in their life.

Both news media and entertainment media perpetuate the negative stereotypes of people with mental illnesses. These stereotypes and stigmas are most often false.

It is up to us to change the conversation about mental illness.

We hosted an event at

the University of La Verne in order to

reduce stigma on

our campus and to put

the issue of mental

illness into perspective.

Our Speaker, Jamie Ritchey from Tri-City Mental Health Services, posed important questions about mental illness stigma:

Why do we treat mental illness differently than physical ailments?

Why are we afraid to seek help?

How can we change this?

The ULV Slam Poetry

Team presented poems on various mental

illnesses, providing personal

and emotional

perspectives on the issue.

James Trejo presents “Letter From Suicide”

Agnes Kamalnath presents “That is”

Kaitlyn lara presents “Azul”

Steven Andrew Forns presents “Telescopes”

Katie Rosenthal presents “Unlatched”
