Common Core Standards

Whole Class:

I will engage the students in the content of this unit through an introductory video using Animoto. The video will give a brief introduction of the unit and what mental math is and how it is useful. The students will then listen to and sing along with a Place Value review song.

Lesson 1: mentally add multiples of ten to a number.

Guided Practice Center Independent Practice Center Practice Game Center Math Fact Center Students rotate through each center

every 15 minutes. Students are leveled and placed in

groups based on ability

Lesson 1: Centers

In this center I will reinforce the skills students have just learned by proposing several practice problems on the interactive whiteboard for students to complete on slates. I will ask questions to start a discussion about whether or not the tens or ones digits changed. I will assess through observations to see which students need added support.

Guided Practice Center

In the independent center students will be completing a practice sheet in a small group. Students will work to add multiples of ten to two-digit numbers. They will also work through problem solving questions and write a number story using two digit numbers.

Independent Center

Students may play the lesson game, “Play a Game” or one of the review games listed below.Ten frame game using NCTM IlluminationsPlace Value Hockey and Number Grid GameBeat the Calculator

Practice Game Center

Beat the Calculator Results

Students will be playing Math Dash is small groups or will be going to Xtramath.com for some math fact practice

Math Fact Center

I will first recap the lesson for students and go over the answers to the independent practice sheet. I will then assess what students have learned by having students complete the quick check assessment independently.
