They live in burrows as being underground keeps them out of reach from predators.

Meerkats live in groups of up to 40 and everyone takes part in gathering food and keeping a lookout for predators.

Meerkats eat things like beetles, caterpillars, lizards, birds, fruit and plants.

Meerkat Behaviour

Some meerkats will perch on high ground on their hind legs to look out for danger. If they sense any, they will squeal to warn the others.

A group of meerkats will have babysitters that look after the pups.

Meerkats can close their eyes and ears to keep dust out when burrowing.

A group of meerkats is called a ‘gang’ or a ‘mob’.

Meerkats have excellent eyesight and can spot an eagle up to a thousand feet away!

The meerkat’s scientific name is Surricata Surricatta.
