New Jaylec ‘intelligent’ battery chargers extend life and improve performance

Jaylec,   Australia’s   leading   supplier   of   automotive   electrical   components,   has   released   a   new   range   of   intelligent  battery  chargers  with  advanced  four-‐stage  charging  that  can  prolong  the  life  of  lead  acid-‐type  batteries.        Jaylec  Intelligent  Battery  Chargers  literally  think  for  themselves,  with  technology  that  ensures  a  quality  100  per  cent  charge  while  breaking  down  harmful  sulphate  deposits  that  can  destroy  a  battery’s  charging  capacity.    The  new  12V  Jaylec  chargers  are  available  in  three  models  offering  different  levels  of  charging  power  to  suit  different  applications  and  budgets.    These  include  the  BC9000  (12V  4  amp),  BC9010  (12V  10amp)  and  BC9020  (20  amp)  model  which  can  charge  6V,  12V  and  24V  batteries.    Jaylec  intelligent  battery  chargers  are  suitable  for  use  with  all  lead  acid  battery  types  including  Flooded,  AGM,  Gel  and  Calcium.    The   advanced   four-‐stage   charging   system   consists   of   Pre-‐Charge,   Bulk   &   Desulphation,   Absorption   and   Float   &  Maintain:

1. Pre-‐Charge  determines  the  overall  health  and  type  of  battery  and  automatically  adjusts  to  the  most  effective  charge  mode.

2. Bulk   &   Desulphation   charges   the   battery   at   the   maximum   available   rate   (constant   current)   until  approximately  80  per  cent  of  the  charge  is  reached.  It  also  breaks  down  harmful  sulphate  deposits  during  this  process.

3. Absorption   charges   the   battery   to   100   per   cent   capacity   using   constant   voltage   and   a   decreasing   rate   of  current.

4. Float  &  Maintain  ensures  that  after  a  battery  has  reached  100  per  cent  capacity,  the  voltage  is  reduced  to  a  lower  level  (float  charge)  to  minimise  gassing  and  prolong  battery  life.  The  charger  can  also  be  left  connected  indefinitely  without  harming  the  battery.

The   entry-‐level   BC9000   charger   is   an   ideal   maintenance   charger   for   all   12V   battery   sizes   and   types   up   to   80Ah  (500CCA).  Fully  automatic  with  adjustable  charge  current,   it  comes  complete  with  a  permanent  mount  harness  and  12V  in-‐car  power  plug  adaptor.    The  mid-‐range  BC9010  is  suitable  for  charging  all  12V  batteries  up  to  200Ah  (1000CCA).  It  is  also  fully  automatic,  with  adjustable  voltage  and  current  settings  plus  automatic  equalisation  and  reconditioning.    The   top-‐of-‐the-‐range  BC9020  can  charge  batteries  up   to  400Ah   (2500CCA)  capacity  and   is   suitable   for  use  with  6V,  12V  or  24V  batteries.

It   is   also   loaded   with   features   including   adjustable   voltage   and   current   settings,   automatic   equalisation   and  reconditioning,  multi-‐function  LED  display  and  an  alternator  check  function.    According  to  Cooldrive  Distribution  Marketing  Manager,  Matt  Russell,  the  damage  caused  to  automotive  batteries  by  the  build-‐up  of  lead  sulphate  required  Jaylec  to  use  an  ‘intelligent’  approach  to  the  science  of  battery  charging.    “When   a   lead   acid   battery   is   discharging   during   service,   lead   sulphate   builds   up   on   the   electrodes   as   part   of   the  chemical  process  that  occurs  between  the  lead  electrons  and  the  sulphuric  acid  in  these  types  of  batteries,”  he  said.    “Great  care  has  to  be  taken  when  recharging  them,  because  if  the  charge  rate  is  not  exactly  right  it  can  increase  the  amount  of  lead  sulphate  deposits  building  up  on  the  electrodes.      “When  this  happens,  it  reduces  the  battery’s  re-‐charging  capacity  and  therefore  its  performance  and  service  life.    “That’s  why  Jaylec’s  new  range  of  intelligent  chargers  uses  a  four-‐stage  recharging  process  that  automatically  senses  the  amount  of  charge  in  the  battery  and  accurately  adjusts  the  charge  rate  throughout.    “It  certainly  takes  the  worry  out  of  battery  charging  and  your  batteries  will  perform  better  and  last  longer.”
