The Medford Friends meetinghouse has sat on a plot of land between present-day Union Street and Allen Avenue since 1814. When the build-ing first opened, the front of the building faced the roadway, then-named Friends Avenue. Today, the rear of the building faces Union Street, with the front of the building accessible through a driveway.
Friends meetinghouse marks bicentennialBy MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The area around the MedfordFriends meetinghouse looks a lotdifferent today than when it firstopened in 1814.
Two hundred years ago, therewas no Medford Township. Themodern-day Union Street did notexist. The area, known then asUpper Evesham, was just a smallvillage. The Medford Friendsmeetinghouse was one of the cen-ters for the community.
Prior to 1814, Medford Friendshad grown into a large communi-ty. Current member Janet Jack-son-Gould said the current meet-inghouse was constructed to facil-itate a rapidly growing congrega-tion.
They had a smaller meetinghouse in the back of the lot, which was all wood, she said. They just outgrew it.
The new meetinghouse wasconstructed just off present-dayUnion Street. Made of brick in-stead of wood, the meetinghouse
has stood the test of time as Med-ford Township was founded andthe area around it developed.
This year marks the bicenten-nial of the meetinghouse, yetvery little has changed with thebuilding. Outside of a 1984 reno-vation that added a communityroom, kitchen and bathrooms, theoriginal building has not been al-

tered.The meetinghouse has seen a
variety of people come throughits doors in the last 200 years.Today, Medford Friends has about100 members. Some have had fam-ily members coming for genera-tions, while others are new to thecommunity.
Its really interesting, becausewe have a number of new mem-bers and families, Jackson-
Gould said. A lot of people havemoved here.
Medford Friends is older thanthe United States, having beenfounded in 1759. It was foundedwith a focus on serving others.
Today, Medford Friends contin-ues to serve the communitythrough a variety of programs. The group has helped to build apeace center in Central Africaand a school in Afghanistan.
Back home, Medford Friendsworks with the homeless and do-nates to multiple food banks inthe area. But one of its moreunique programs is its work withmothers who are in prison andunable to see their children.
We have a reading programfor mothers who are in jail, Jack-son-Gould said. We give them atape recorder and a book to read. Then we give the tape to theirkids.
Medford Friends has numer-ous projects with local prisoners. Many of the early Friends mem-bers were persecuted and put into
jails. While such persecution doesnot take place today, the organiza-tion still maintains its connectionto its early roots.
Friends did take time out onSunday, June 8 to celebrate itsmeetinghouses 200th anniver-sary. Members gathered outside
for a picnic lunch with music, games and other entertainment.Members of other meetinghousesin town also came to the event.
Jackson-Gould described thecelebration as one of unity. TheMedford Friends meetinghousehas hosted local Quakers for 200years and Jackson-Gould believesthe community is strong enoughto continue gathering in thebuilding for centuries to come.

e realize that you may have
other, more pressing con-
cerns on your mind. After
all, summer has officially started, the
kids are out of school, its hot, its
rainy, then its hot again.
Youd rather be by a pool or at the
beach, avoiding the South Jersey bear
or the Jersey Shore shark, planning
your Fourth of July celebrations, your
family vacation, or pondering the silli-
ness of the government making salt
water taffy the states official candy.
And yes, we realize that late June is
not typically the time for reflection.
That is usually reserved for the wan-
ing days of December and the begin-ning of a new year.
But for us at Elauwit Media, weve
spent the last few months looking
back, and well be spending a chunk of
our summer doing the same.
Thats because, come August, well
be turning 10 years old. Our first
newspaper, The Haddonfield Sun, de-
buted in August 2004. Since then,
weve expanded quite a bit.
Along the way, we have some great
memories. Weve made great contacts,
some great friends and have done our
best to serve the residents of every
town we cover.
Now, its time to reflect on those 10
years. This summer, well be celebrat-ing the last decade, and we want your
input.
What has the last 10 years meant to
you? What does your life look like
today compared to what it looked like
in 2004? What does any stretch of 10
years mean in a larger sense?
Over the summer, well be compil-
ing stories, photos and more that help
us paint a picture of what 2004-2014
has meant, both to us specifically and
to the town and its residents.
If youd like to be a part of this ef-
fort, if youd like to contribute your
thoughts, your insights, your stories
and your photos, please send an email
to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com.
Were involving our readers in our
10-year celebration because you are
the reason we started our first Sun
newspaper, you are the reason we
started more, and you are the reason
we continue to publish every week. The last 10 years have been great for
us, and we hope they have been equal-
ly as great for you.
Help us reflect on these past 10 years
as we prepare for the next 10, and
hopefully even more.
Help usas we celebrate 10yearsWe want your input onwhat the last decade has meant to you
Help us out
We want to hear your stories and see yourphotos from the last 10 years. Send themin to tronaldson@elauwitmedia.com withthe subject line 10-year celebration.
Utility pole signs prompt township actionBy MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun
An excess number of signs on utilitypoles in Medford is leading the township totake action.
Township manager Chris Schultz saidthe township will use Clean Communitiesfunds to pay for overtime for public worksstaff to go through the township and col-lect signs on utility poles.
Theyre going zone by zone and takingevery sign down, he said. Then theyrestoring them and the zoning officer will beinventorying them.
Schultz has asked residents at previousmeetings to not hang signs on utility poles,
citing it is against state law.The problems have stemmed from two
sets of people. Schultz said some signs arefrom legitimate businesses, while othersare from cell phone-operated businesses.
A lot of these signs are from non-localpeople, Schultz said. Theyre from busi-nesses from all over the state.
Schultz also said there are organizationsintentionally putting signs high up on thepoles and keeping them out of peoples
reach. Some of these signs are very high up,
he said. People are taking deliberative ac-tion to make sure these signs are so high, that you cant just go and rip them down.
The township will go through the confis-
cated signs and issue warnings to viola-tors. The focus will be on legitimate busi-nesses the township can track down, be-cause the township is unable to go after cellphone-based businesses.
The police are not allowed to look upthose phone numbers, Schultz said Itsnot a criminal issue.
Schultz noted utility companies are re-sponsible for enforcement. However, aftertalking with Atlantic City Electric, remov-
ing signage from poles is something it isnot able to do regularly.
Theyre just as overwhelmed, Schultzsaid. They dont have the resources.

Pace: Township should lookinto grants for clean up
Councilman Randy Pacequestioned using Clean Commu-nities funding to clear utilitypoles.
Why would we use our CleanCommunities grant funding topay for overtime? he asked.
Schultz added the townshipwould bill the utility companiesin the future. He suggested going
through the township twice ayear to clean the poles as long as
the utility companies were reim-bursing the township.
Pace said the township shouldlook into grants to help pay forpole clean up. Schultz said hewould talk to the utility compa-nies and inquire about programsin the coming weeks.
Council also discussed havinga meeting with state legislators toamend the state law on utilitypoles. With the utility companiesunable to keep up with enforcingthe statute, Schultz suggesteddrafting an amendment to give
municipalities enforcement pow-ers.
