NOTICE OF wEED CUTTINgNOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN to all

township officials, landowners and/oroperators that weeds and grass shall bemowed on all township roadsides andright-of-ways in a satisfactory workman-like manner by July 15, 2019 and againafter September 1 but before October 1,2019.

Weeds and grass that have been cutwith a swather and have fallen on the road,must be removed within 24 hours or a fineof $100 per mile will be added to the taxesof the land adjoining such right-of-way forthe cost of removal. Trees and brush mustalso be controlled. If not, the County mayrefuse service on those roads.

If this work is not completed by July15, 2019 and October 1, 2019, the workwill be done by the Township supervisorsor County Commissioners at the cost of$200 per mile with a minimum of $100 foranything less, and will be added to thetaxes of the land adjoining such right-of-way.

Due to the high cost of maintainingroads and the removal of snow, a mini-mum 9 foot cut must be made to insure theweeds are not higher than the shoulder ofthe road. Roads that are not cut to thesestandards may not receive maintenanceduring the winter months.

July 19, 2019 — Today is thebirthday of Georg Hildebrandt, whowas born in 1911 in a German vil-lage in the Ukraine. In 1993,Hildebrandt’s book, “Why Are YouStill Alive? A German in the Gulag,”was published in the German lan-guage. A German reviewer wrote,“Why are you still alive? That is thecynical question of a KGB officer tothe author... His fate, which onecould avoid only by escape or sui-cide, represents that of thousands offellow-sufferers. Imaginative, sym-pathetic readers should have strongnerves for this book.”

On NDSU’s Germans fromRussia website, Hildebrandt writes,“Many Germans died in Siberiandetention camps during Stalin’s dic-tatorship. As Germans, they weredeclared as public enemies and after1941, they were accused of collabo-rating with the Fascists.”

Dr. Erich Franz Sommer writes inthe preface: “Testimonies were onlyrarely given by German campinmates; more rarely yet, by thoseGerman colonists who experiencedthemselves forced collectivization inthe Volga region, in the Ukraine, andin the Caucasus, and on the Crimeanpeninsula, and who have surviveddecades of resettlement in Siberiaand Central Asia.

“That is why this biography andthe report of suffering by theUkrainian-German, GeorgeHildebrandt, are of documentaryvalue. He speaks not only for him-self, he speaks also vicariously forthose whose cries and prayers inprisons and in detention camps fellsilent without finding an ear. GeorgeHildebrandt’s report, which I canconfirm from my own experiences,”continues Sommer, “recalls a chap-ter of the Soviet Union’s past withwhich people are still trying to cometo terms and, as far as this is possi-ble, the Kremlin cannot be indiffer-ent towards revising it.”

Hildebrandt, himself, writes, “Iwas born on 19 July 1911, in theGerman village of Kondratjevka,Ukraine, the second of five children.My forefathers came to Russia in

1778.”“After finishing junior high

school in 1927, I worked on myfather’s farm. In March 1929, Stalinbegan to collectivize agriculture, theruin and destruction of many mil-lions of farmers, Russian andGerman alike.”

“Very early one morning inMarch 1930, militia and secretagents of the state police occupiedour entire town,” he said. “All menand boys from 16 years of age werearrested and jailed. I was amongthem. This was my first arrest. Ibegan forced labor in road construc-tion in Konstantinovka. In the fall Ifled to my relatives in Madestovka,where I took a correspondencecourse for technical draftsman untilspring 1931. A series of arrests,imprisonment, and even one escapefollowed, taking me through severallabor camps including that of theinfamous Kolyma.”

“In 1952,” he continues, “I wasprematurely released from a concen-tration camp to remain foreverexiled in Kolyma. However, in1953, I was arrested for the fifthtime in my life and transported to theUrals. The journey took me throughMagadan and (five) prisons, where Iarrived to reunite with my familyalready living there in exile.Immediately after my arrival, I wasadmitted to the hospital for tubercu-losis patients. I had contracted thehighly communicable disease in oneof the prisons.”

Hildebrandt later had two sec-tions of his lung removed inMoscow. He returned to school, andpursued his profession as a drafts-man for ten years before retiring in1971. Three years later he wasallowed to emigrate with his familyto the Federal Republic of Germany.
