Handel Architects was one of 10 firms invited to compete in the Malaysia Square competition. The competition called for the design of a bridge and public plaza in the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station in London. During the comeptition I worked on a wide variety of taks. The form of our bridge was developed primarily by partner Michael Arad and myself. I was in charge of developing and modeling the exact form of the bridge, as well as designing the paneling pattern. Although Bjark Ingles Group ended up winning the competition, our design was shortlisted, and ended up coming in 3rd Place.

Malaysia Square must have a singular and iconic presence in a dynamic cityscape that is crowded and full of competing visual attractions: Gilbert Scott’s monumental Power Station and its iconic chimney topped structure, and the rippled and undulating facades of apartment buildings by Norman Foster and Frank Gehry that form new urban canyons. This proposed intervention sits directly by the new ‘front door’ of the Power Station, at the confluence of the ‘Ring Road’ that surrounds the historic building, and the terminus of the ‘Electric Boulevard’ that leads up to it. This space already negotiates a significant change in grade between these two elements with an elevated roadway that bridges over an outdoor plaza. Our proposal builds upon this dynamic relationship by extending the plaza and creating a covered bridge with two towers that mark the bridge supports and echo the bilateral symmetry of the old Power Station in a new visual idiom that is firmly of the 21st century.

One of the design opportunities seized was the chance to strengthen the connection between the Power Station and its adjacent context to the South, making Malaysia Square an integral part of the refurbished Power Station: a new gateway and forecourt to the old building. This proposal removes some of the secondary pedestrian bridges that have been suggested as they obscure the façade and diminish the presence of the historic building. In the same vein, the vehicular traffic across this elevated roadway is concealed by wrapping the existing bridge in an enclosed metal sheath. The covered bridgepresents a solid presence to the South, towards the new Electric Boulevard, while the North face of the bridge is slit open to reveal an expansive and stepped terrace that overlooks the Power Station and Malaysia Square. This cantilevered terrace acts as mezzanine seating to the reconfigured ‘bowl’ below that is encompassed with bleachers and steps. This arrangement creates a center of focus and activity for Malaysia Square that will be ringed by spectators, with the Power Station itself as the backdrop to this informal stage.

The Bridge and the Square have a reciprocal relationship, and the open structure of the bridge, with its undulating surface that transitions from being interior to exterior creates a sense of place and marks a spot within the broader flow of public space throughout this new neighborhood and urban context. Being here, one is at the center, at the confluence of multiple streams of passage; this is the new Malaysia Square.

Handel Architects was invited by GID Developers to participate in a competition to design a large mixed use tower in NYC located on 59th Street along the Hudson. The competition had several unique challenges, the most difficult of which was that the project already had it’s quirky angular zoning envelope (originally designed by 1994 Pritzker Laureate Christian de Portzamparc) approved by the city. As such, we were challenged to design a complex mixed use tower within the tight confines of the zoning envelope. During the competition I worked on a wide variety of tasks including facade and balcony schemes, extensive digital modeling, and the production of diagrams, sections, and elevations. The chosen scheme creates views terraces for an extremely high percentage of the condo units, achieves high floor plan efficiencies, and creates a powerful arrival sequence that gives a ground floor identity to the project. The architectural form creates a new powerful signiture on the Manhattan skyline, as well as being resonant withe its dramatic waterfront site.

GID Developers bought this project from another developer who lost their funding in the market crash of 2008. However, the original developers had the zoning envelopes, designed by 1994 Pritzker Laureate Christian de Portzamparc, approved by the city. For political reasons, GID Developers could not risk canceling the approved zoning envelopes and resubmitting new ones. As such, one of the biggest challenges of the competition was designing a highly complex residential building which met all of the client’s specific square footage requirements, all while fitting inside the odd, angular zoning envelope.

Handel Architects won a competition by BLDG Management to design a project in Manhattan betweeen 43rd and 44th street.The mixed use residential tower is a mix of affordable and market rate units. Handel architects was responsible for the design of the building envelope, and SLCE Architects were commisioned for the interiors. During the project I worked on 3D modeling, rendering, diagrams, and various design options for the building’s massing, facade, balconies, canopy, and lobby.

The Western Wall is situated next to the Dome of the Rock, here the Islam religion believes their prophet Mohammad ascended into heaven, and is considered one of their most holy spaces. Additionally, all three prayer spaces are accessed through one security screening point. Due to the controversial nature of our project, extensive security studies were carried out.
