From the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor
It gives me immense pleasure to inform that the two pres-
tigious departments of Gauhati University, namely the
Department of Economics and the Department of Business
Administration, have collaboratively launched the Master of
Business Economics programme, a brand new professional
course that has never been offered in the North-east before.
The Master of Business Economics programme is a blend
of Finance, Economics and Management and aims to
develop in students an analytical bent of mind, a
competitive spirit and a socially responsible outlook. It feels
great to have learnt that the first ‘Placement Brochure’ for
the session 2010-11 is going to come up.
I take the opportunity to convey my best wishes to all concerned for the grand success of the
programme. I hope the Placement Brochure will fetch all the necessary details and will reflect the
potentials of both the Departments.
Regards,
Prof. O.K.Medhi

About a couple of years back from now, some of us in the
Departments of Economics and Business Administration
of Gauhati University got into a discussion about the
need and potential of a Masters programme in Business
Economics which the two departments could get togeth-
er to offer. While the flagship programmes of the two
departments - MA/MSc in Economics and MBA – had
been offering useful training for creating human capital
for use of the society and the economy, it was realized the two departments could pull their resources to train
up Economists who would not only have a good grounding on economic theories and research methods but
would acquire greater insights into things like business accounting and gather more hands on exposure in the
areas of marketing, corporate governance and the working of the financial markets. It was felt that such a course
would prepare students to readily take up the responsibility of an Economist in a business organization.
Accordingly the syllabus was framed and finalized after incorporating feedbacks from experts from academ-
ics, corporate sector and banks. After a due screening process, the first batch was admitted in July 2009. The
National Assessment and Accreditation Committee team that visited Gauhati University earlier this year highly
appreciated the endeavor of the two departments. We believe that organizations that will come forward to re-
cruit the products of this joint endeavor of the two departments will also get to appreciate our effort.
