The importance of this set cannot be over-stated. First released on7 separate CDs by Olympia, it launched the international reputationof Anthony Goldstone and Caroline Clemmow as one of the world’sforemost duos, and it remains the only complete recording ofSchubert’s original duet compositions including many little-knownmasterpieces and one Polonaise completed by Goldstone fromSchubert’s unfinished manuscript. Each disc concludes with aPolonaise encore written by Schumann, inspired by Schubert. Theset represents the whole stretch of Schubert’s output from D.1 toD.968.
The performances are superb, exhilarating and perfectly integrated:the husband and wife team really do play like one person with fourhands.
Tragically, Anthony Goldstone died on January 2, 2017 while wewere finalizing the design work, and did not live to see the re-issueof this marvelous collection, repackaged and remastered as a boxset.

E‘ESKENFET(
A varied range of masterful works from English 20th
centurycomposers – some familiar and all major works of importance. Elgarcomposed his Enigma Variations at the piano; it was alwayssuitable for a solo version and Elgar himself wrote this. Bowen’sFlute Sonata is well known – a Romantic staple – as is Leighton’sElegy, which deserves to be better known. The piano solo workFolio I is lively and full of fun, while the two Sonnets of Rubbra areexquisitely gorgeous and absolutely essential listening.
Fine performances by pianist Elspeth Wyllie who is anaccomplished soloist and chamber musician/accompanist, workingthroughout the UK and other countries. The young set of musicianshere show exceptional talent and musicianship in the recordedworks which are very varied yet make up a coherent concert album.

RELEASE DATE: May 19, 2017
Kevin Raftery is an American composer who has beenworking in the UK since 1989, and also plays bassoon, singscontemporary vocal music, and works as a Project Manager. His work is thoroughly modern, without classical limitations, butis also in turn lyrical, tuneful, dramatic and serene, givingappeal to more than just fans of modernist music. In fact this istop-class post-modern work. While the Quartet and Quintetare formal works, the Pleasantries suite is full of wit, based on‘figure of speech’ expressions.
The three ensembles here are all celebrated in their own right:The Heath Quartet, quartet in residence at MiddleburyCollege, Vermont, near to Metier HQ, have appeared at theBBC Proms, at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center and havemade several acclaimed recordings. The Berkeley Ensembleand Animare Ensemble were both formed to explore modernchamber music as well as more traditional material: bothhave flexible configurations and employ some of the UK’s topsoloists and orchestral principals.

RELEASE DATE: May 19, 2017
Liz Johnson is a British composer with a very special gift and distinctivestyle, definitely in the avant-garde mold yet not totally alien to‘traditional-music’ lovers. ‘Intricate Web’ is not only the title of one of thequartets here (there are four numbered String Quartets and two otherworks for the quartet) but also accurately describes her compositionaltechnique which is complex and detailed, requiring top class performers. It may also describe the way in which the pieces here have beenassembled, splitting cello solos and vocal pieces between the quartets tocreate a web of fascinating sounds and textures.
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet is undoubtedly one of today’s mostcelebrated ensembles with a fine reputation in the world of new music.Cellist Heather Tuach plays solo in the breathtaking Cello Suite. SopranoLoré Lixenberg deals with the immense difficulty of the writing in the JoShapcott Settings and Ronald Woodley provides a magical performanceon several clarinets. In all, a superb introduction to a major composerdeserving wide recognition. Over 157 minutes of music!
