We need more data.We need more data-driven interactions.

We need better rules about using data.

Categories of activity are breaking down.

The number of signals we can access digitally has grown exponentially. We’re approaching the limit of

what our current tools can extract.

The number of signals we can access digitally has grown exponentially. We’re approaching the limit of

what our current tools can extract.

To get to deeper knowledge and understanding, we need to get to a new way of listening: both how we

listen to signals, and what signals we listen to.

examples and discussion

As data and algorithms become more important, users need more information on how they’re used.

A user should have a clearer relationship with a system that

makes decisions for her.

“Our inability to describe and understand [technological infrastructure] reduces our critical reach, leaving us both disempowered and, quite often, vulnerable. !Infrastructure must not be a ghost. Nor should we have only mythic imagination at our disposal in attempts to describe it. 'The Cloud' is a good example of a dangerous simplification at work, akin to a children's book.” !- Julian Oliver

“This book looks at everyday objects through a pair of terms: technology and technique. The first consists of the structures, devices, and systems we use; the second, of our skills in using them.”

- Edward Tenner
