About our Maths activities

Mental Maths starters

Choose one of the challenges to complete. These should be quick starters lasting about 5 minutes.

Activities

We have included some different activities for each day. You can choose whether you would like to do the ‘Activity Time’ or the

Maths No Problem workbook pages if they have not already been completed.

We are now using Maths No Problem Book 2.

Mental Maths Starter

Practise counting in 10s.

Can you count to 120 in 10s?

Can you count backwards from 120 in 10s?

Monday Starter

Monday 6th July

L.O – To be able to identify equal groupings as the first step in multiplying

• I can make equal groups.

• I can count the number of groups.

• I can count the number of objects in each group.

• I can count the total number of objects.

What does the word ‘equal’ mean? This means that each plate would have the same amount of cookies.

Activity Time!Making equal groups.

Choose one of the challenges below: green, amber or red. You can use Lego, bricks, small toys etc. to help show your groups.

Get the amount of objects and put them into equal groups. Can you put them into equal groups of 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.?

Get 10 objects.

Get 12 objects.

Get 18 objects.

Can you count backwards from 24 in 2s?

Tuesday Starter

Tuesday 7th July

L.O – To be able to understand that we can count groups of the same quantity more efficiently; to be able to find multiple ways of counting groups of the same quantity.

• I can count all of the objects.

• I can count in twos, threes and fives.

• I can tell if the groups are equal even when the arrangement is different.

How many bananas are there altogether?How many crisp tubes are there altogether?Could counting in 2s, 3s and 5s help?

Activity Time!Adding equal groups

You can work with an adult or brother or sister at home.

You can use bricks or small toys instead of counters.

Once you have finished the activity on the right, try some other ones:

Take 4 plates. Put 3 on each plate. How many altogether?

Take 2 plates. Put 9 on each plate. How many altogether?

Wednesday 8th July

L.O – To be able to organise objects into equal rows in order to begin counting equal numbers efficiently.

• I can count all of the objects.

• I can describe what a row is.

• I can count the number of rows.

• I can count the number of objects in each row.

Does it help that they are in rows?

Activity Time!Making equal rows

You can work with an adult or brother or sister at home.

You can use bricks or small toys instead of counters.

Make equal rows using your chosen objects. You can choose how many or use the questions below.

Can you make 6 rows of 2?

Can you make 4 rows of 5?

Remember to say e.g. ‘There are 4 rows. 5 in each row. 4 rows of 5 is 20’

Thursday Starter

Thursday 9th July

L.O – To be able to understand that doubling is creating an identical number to the one you started with and that doubling is the same as saying two groups of the same amount.

• I can add the same number twice.

• I can double numbers to 10.

• I can use concrete materials to show doubling.

• I can draw pictures to show doubling.

What does double mean?

Extra challengeCan you double numbers up to 10? Show this using pictures. You could use a mirror andobjects tohelp.

You can use objects to show the number rolled –remember to double them.
