Welcome to…Maths Evening

The purpose of the evening…

2. Ways for parents to support maths learning at home and out in the big wide world.

1. To raise awareness of how teachers teach maths and how children learn maths.

Were you positive about maths at school?

Are you positive about using maths now?

What are the implications of our attitudes to maths for our children?

Think about your maths background as a parent…

Children are like “Popcorn”

They all pop at different times!

The strands of the New Zealand Mathematics

Curriculum.1. Number and Algebra.2. Geometry and Measurement.3. Statistics.

Number and Algebra.

Number – Knowledge.

2+2 (basic facts). 10 more than 32

Strategies. How to work a problem out.Round and compensate.

Most of scheduled maths time is spent on this strand.

Geometry:Shapes, symmetry, direction, translation, enlargement… Measurement:Time, money, length, distance, speed…

Stages in Numeracy:

Examples of thinking at each stage for addition / subtraction

Children learn by…

Being actively involved.

Question… How? What? Where? When? Who?

Why? Which?

What makes you think that?

How do you know?

It’s not about the destination (i.e. the

answer) …the journey is highly valued!

Two key questions to ask your children…

Explain how you got that answer ?

Is there another way you could work it out?

Teachers: Maths is all around us!

Be the detective and find the pattern – crack the code!

Facilitate and support children to put on their mathematical lenses.

Integrate. Time for FUN!

Support children to ‘Have a Go’.
