Math Summer Work in IXLfor Students Going Into Grades 3-8:Overview for Students and Parents

What Parents, and Students, Can Expect

Student-Centered Approach

• Using individual student-level data from this school year, your math teacher has assigned a set of essential skills for you to practice in IXL over the summer. This is a combination of grade-level work and student-specific recommendations.

• Assigned skills focus on two areas:

* growth in skills not yet mastered (individually recommended)

* review and mastery of essential grade-level curriculum goals (assigned by grade-level)

Setting Students Up for Success

Our math teachers have worked very closely to:

• Identify the essential skills for success for each grade level

• Choose additional skills specific to each student based upon each student’s mastery of content this school year

• Ensure the "essential" skills are truly key pre-requisite skills for success in math the following year

Expectations

Between June 12, 2021 and August 26, 2021:Students rising into grades 3-8 are expected to complete the assigned skills (a combination of essential skills assigned by grade level and individually recommended skills assigned to each student) by achieving a minimum score of 80 for each assigned skill, AND/OR by spending at least 20 minutes of active practice on each assigned skill.

You have 10 weeks for summer work, so this means working on one or two skills/week if practice is completed every week, which is highly recommended.

For students registering during the summer or students with accommodations, your recommended skills may be modified from this.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Steps:1. Print out the list of essential skills identified by grade level for the math

class you will be in next year (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry)

2. Log into IXL (https://www.ixl.com/signin/stmarkscs) to see if your child’s teacher has also assigned student-specific recommendations1. Go to “Learning” then “Recommendations”2. Under “Recommendations,” you will see what has been

recommended by your math teacher listed in two ways:1. A star next to a drop-down menu – you will see all recommended

skills in that drop-down menu2. Sample questions for each recommended skill area in graphics,

with links to the specific skill at the bottom of that image/sample question.

Identifying Individually Recommended Skills:If your child’s teacher has recommended individual skills, they can be found under “Learning” then “Recommendations”

(Shown graphically by skill and as a drop down list of skills):

Instructions:1. Go to https://www.ixl.com/signin/stmarkscs

2. Sign in using your username and password. If you forgot it, your parent can email kreineberg@stmark.org. Remember, you don’t get credit for your work if you are not signed in!

3. Work on all skills identified in the printout of essential skills for the math class you will be in next year, AND on the skills that have been marked as “Recommended” to you by your teacher (if your child’s teacher recommended additional skill practice).

4. Work on each skill to:1. Achieve a score of 80 or above on each assigned skill, AND/OR2. Spend at least 20 active minutes on each assigned skill. You can do it!

5. Please spread your work across the summer. This will help you!

Tracking Your Progress

Tracking Your Progress (p.1):

1. There are a few ways to track your progress. We suggest doing the following. For analytics, log into the IXL website, not the IXL app.

2. While logged into IXL, Go to Learning, then Math, then Analytics

3. Under Analytics, choose Progress

Tracking Your Progress (p.2):

1. In Progress, specify: Subject (Math); Skill Grades (choose PreK-12); and Date Range (make sure you choose June 12, 2021 and beyond)

Jun 10, 2020 – Aug 24, 2020

Tracking Your Progress (p.3):1. Under Progress, you can see each skill worked on, the amount

of time spent on the skill, and the score achieved for the skill.

Grade and Skills worked on:

Subject and dates (make sure dates are June 12, 2021 and beyond)

Time spent on skill (min. 20 minutes per skill AND/OR min. score of 80 per skill)

Score achieved on skill

Match to Grade-level and Individually Assigned Skills

• Just make sure the completed skills listed on the “Progress and Improvement” page for dates June 12, 2021-August 26, 2021 are the same ones noted in:

• Grade-specific skills assigned

• Student-specific recommended

skills

You can print the “Progress and

Improvement” page out for

comparison purposes!

Yes, it is really that simple to track your progress!

The summer work will count as a test grade for the first trimester of your school year. (One point per completed skill up

to 20 points)!

Remember, the more you practice this summer, the more confident and comfortable you will feel next school year!

Have fun!
