Math 5Patterns & Expressions

Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

In this lesson we will learn how you can use patterns

to show relationships.

Math Warm-up

An airplane left Seattle, Washington, USA at 9:45 A.M. and arrived in Los Angeles at 1:15 P.M. How long was the flight?

Try to do this mentally.

Math Warm-up-ANSWERAn airplane left Seatle, Washington, USA at 9:45 A.M. and arrived in Los Angeles at 1:15 P.M. How long was the flight. 3 ½ hours

How did you do? You can count hours with fingers and then the left over minutes was changed to show a fraction…30 min. out of 60 min = 1/2

In this lesson we will answer the question:

How do I evaluate patterns and expressions to find the unknown variables?

Vocabulary Review Algebraic expression- a mathematical phrase involving variables, numbers, and operations.

Variable- is a letter or symbol that represents an unknown amount that can change.

Vocabulary Review

Operations – Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division

Represent – a symbol to replace something else.

Patterns & ExpressionsDianesta wanted to buy tickets to the concert for herself and some friends. What is the total cost of all the tickets?Let t = the number of tickets purchased.

What is it that we need to know or want to find out?

Patterns & ExpressionsDianesta saw a pattern: Each ticket increased by 4 dollars.

She wrote an algebraic expression to show the relationship between the number of tickets and the total cost.

The total cost of tickets for any number of friends can be represented by the algebraic expression: 4 x t.

Patterns & Expression

1. Megan and Tenai have the same birthday, but Tenai is 6 years older. In the table, m is Megan’s age and m + 6 is Tenai’s age. Complete the table.

m 3 5 ?

M + 6 ? ? 14

Evaluate each expression for n = 5 and n = 2.

1. 40 n

2. 4.5 + n 3. 16n

4. 50 – n5. 8n

Look for patterns to solve for the unknown quantities in algebraic expressions.Step 1: Look for the change that is consistent to create a predictable pattern. Step 2: Solve for the unknown variable to find the correct quantity.
