Math Warm-up - ANSWERS

Double each number below. Use mental math.

1. 64 128

2. 99 198

3. 106 212

In this lesson we will answer the question:

How do you find the combined volume of two rectangular prisms?

Print slides 14-16 and slide 18 to use with this lesson.

Vocabulary Reviewgeometric solid- a figure that has three dimensions and takes up space

polyhedron – another name for a 3-D figure, which means ‘many faces’

Vocabulary Reviewvolume- the number of cubic units needed to fill a solid figure (measured as u3)

cubic unit – the volume of a cube that measures 1 unit on each edge

Vocabulary Reviewrectangular prism- A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles

prism – solid with two congruent parallel bases and faces that are parallelograms

Vocabulary Reviewrectangular prism- A solid (3-dimensional) object which has six faces that are rectangles

depth – extent downward or backward or inward; "the depth of the water"; "depth of a shelf"; "depth of a closet"

Connecting to Previous Learning

In previous lessons, you have worked to find the volume of rectangular prisms. In this lesson, you will use what you have learned to find the combined volume of rectangular prisms.

Students determine the volume of concrete needed to build the steps in the diagram below.

Lesson Review

When calculating the volume of an object made of two or more rectangular prisms, break that object into separate rectangular prisms first.Next, calculate the volume of each of the rectangular prisms. Finally, add the volumes together to find the total volume of the object.

Quick CheckIn your Math Notebook

In 1 and 2, use the shape below.

1. What are the length, width, and height of prism A? Prism B?

2. How else could you separate the shape into two rectangular prisms?

Today you learned how to find the volume of an object that is made up of two rectangular prisms.

Good Work with this

lesson.
