Hello! Welcome to our spring season! Since joining the Marine Theatre in October we have been busy hunting down a varied and exciting programme of events for you. We hope you like it. Thank you to everyone who has made us so welcome since our arrival. We must give particular thanks to all of our loyal volunteers and TheatreFriends, who breathe life into the Marine and make it the theatre it is.
The Marine Theatre is able to bring high-profile, high-quality acts to play right on your doorstep. Its unique position, rich history and distinctive character attract exceptional theatre, dance, literature and music from across the country and even the world.
So, time to put our money where our mouth is. What have we got lined-up for you? Let’s pick out just a few. Hailing from the world of literature, we will be welcoming much-loved poet Brian Patten to the Marine’s stage as well as Radio 4’s Matt Harvey. Angel Exit Theatre, a local company which has achieved big things, brings us its exciting new production ‘The Secret Garden’. The Budapest Café Orchestra, who sell out shows across the country, visit for the first time, as does comic singer-songwriter and stand-up stalwart Boothby Graffoe. Pickled Image’s visit in March kicks off the beginning of a new series called ‘see–play–sunday’ where, on the last Sunday of every month, we’ll be hosting a top-quality production for children and young people, accompanied by activities, workshops and much more. During the Easter Holidays, Ewan Wardrop brings his one-man show ‘Formby’ to the Marine. Having worked with Ewan and having seen this production through from the very beginning of its development, we’re sure that you will go away humming Formby’s tunes, chuckling to yourself under your breath and maybe evenleaning on the odd lamppost.
So, some great events coming up this spring and we really believe there’s something for everyone. We’re sure you’re going to love all the acts; so sure, in fact, we’ll guarantee it. So if you come along to a performance you really don’t enjoy, leave in the first 30 minutes and we’ll give you every penny of your money back. No hard feelings. Just suck it and see!
Whatever you decide to come and see, we look forward to welcoming you to The Marine Theatre this spring.

Following the success of Angel Exit’s previous visit to the Marine Theatre in 2010 with their production ‘Moonfleet’, we are delighted to be welcoming them back.
In this stage version of the much loved novel, spoilt orphan Mary Lennox is plucked from the bright vibrancy of India and transported to a vast old house, brimming with secrets on the grey Yorkshire moors.
As the wind wuthers around the mysterious manor, Mary encounters locked doors, a curious robin, a gruff old gardener and strange cries echoing through the house.
A hidden key unlocks the secret garden, but what will this unlock in Mary? Will she be able to help her grieving uncle and whoever is wailing down the corridor?
Angel Exit celebrates the centenary of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s ‘The Secret Garden’ with a brand new production presented in their own rich visual style, with beautiful puppets, live singing and an original soundtrack.
‘There is so much vivid theatricality and inventiveness at work here.’ - Lyn Gardner, The Guardian on ‘Invisible Prisons’.

We’re very excited to be welcoming the brilliant musicians of The Budapest Café Orchestra on their first visit to the Marine Theatre. Performing powerful and driving folk-based music from Eastern Europe, inspired by European gypsies, they play violin, guitar, accordion, double bass, saz and balalaika. The Budapest Café Orchestra plays an impassioned and tender mixture of Hungarian Czardas, Russian and Ukrainian folk songs and dances from Romania and Moldavia as well as their own electrifying compositions. The music evokes vivid images of Tzigane fiddle maestros, Budapest café life and gypsy campfires.
‘There are gigs where you want to dance on the tables, gigs where you want to weep in your borscht, gigs where you want to rip your clothes off and immolate yourself with schnapps and a Zippo just for the hell of it, and gigs where you really, really want to join the band. If you come away from an evening with the Budapest Café Orchestra without wanting to do at least two things from that list, then you are no human.’ - The Brighton Argus

Wolf Tales
We’re jumping for joy at the start of this super-special series. ‘see-play-sunday’ will bring the best in theatre for children and young people to the Marine on the last Sunday of every month. As if that weren’t enough, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to join in too, with messy sessions, workshops and lots, lots more. For the next event in this series please see page 21.
Little Red Riding Hood is out on stage telling the world the same old story about Grandma and the Big Bad Wolf, blah, blah, blah!
Come backstage and meet Mr. B.B. Wolf, renowned thespian and notorious villain, as he takes a break between scenes to set the record straight.
Is Red Riding Hood as innocent as she seems? Is Grandma as sweet as she claims? And as for those three little pigs…
Pickled Image uses puppetry, shadows and songs to create a spectacular and hilarious exposé of the truth behind these classic fairy tales for the whole family.
Why not drop in to the theatre beforehand and take an imaginative journey into Red Riding Hood’s woods with the RSPB? Activities such as colouring-in and mask making, all with a wildlife theme, will be running at the theatre from midday. Come and say hello! Please note young children must be accompanied by an adult, but don't worry Mum and Dad, we'll pop the kettle on and have somewhere for you to put your feet up!

‘Turned out nice again hasn’t it?’ ‘Formby’ follows George Formby’s rise from awkward stable boy to one of Britain’s biggest stars. In this one-man performance Ewan Wardrop plays the legendary entertainer, as well as the key characters in a fascinating slice of his life. Featuring many of George Formby’s unique and hilarious songs, brilliantly recreated on the ukulele, this new play not only celebrates one of Britain’s greatest performers but is also a funny, touching and thoughtful look into the life of an essentially ordinary man with an extraordinary talent.
We’re especially pleased to be welcoming Ewan back to the Marine Theatre after his last visit with Shanty Theatre Company’s ‘Rebel Harbour’. His previous credits include work with Matthew Bourne, Complicite and the Royal Opera House, so be sure to catch his fantastic show when it visits Lyme Regis.
