SUMMER 2009 - FIRST YEAR GRADUATETWO WEEK PROJECT

The focus of this studio was to extract form through additive and referential processes. The initial phase was to devise parameters that would guide the generation of a graphic field. Each successive layer referenced former layers. This process of additive layering assisted in examining gestures, trajectories, void, and volume. The final phase was the production of a three dimensional form/model which was generated through sectional abstraction of the cumulative layers.

SUMMER 2008 - FIRST YEAR GRADUATE9 WEEK CUMULATIVE PROJECT

The focus of this experimental studio proposed a basic methodology for exploring and understanding the realm of spatial phenomena and materiality, and its effects in the human psyche.

The pedagogical methodology introduced the importance of the phenomena of space in the deep connection within the human emotional realm. A sequence of exploratory drawings, mapping exercises, and proto-architectual constructions cumulated into the design of conceptual form.

PHENOMENAL STRUCTURES

These constructions assist in the exploration of spatial and sensory qualities. They exist as tools to examine visual features and architectural elements (walls, ground and roof planes, columns, openings, volumes, voids, separation and joinery, directionality, proportion etc). The manipulation of perspective to generate illusions and distortions were encouraged. These spaces are more than visual; they are inherently perceptual and the task was one of exploring personal and emotional responses through form.

These devices, composed of layered images, produce meaning through the combination of material phenomena and image. This layering is generated using transparent, translucent, and opaque materials, color, images and other materials assembled into a three-dimensional collage.

FALL 2008 - FIRST YEAR GRADUATE TWO WEEK PROJECT

The approach of this residential design is to incorporate the reuse of materials and the reclamation of space for productive and sociable uses. The site is located in the Sherman Heights neighborhood of San Diego on a undeveloped and topographically challenging lot. The residential program integrates exterior living spaces such as a courtyard with pool, yet additionally offers productive areas for gardening. The footprint has been specifically contained to offer privacy yet provide a potential area for a communal urban garden.

This proposal intends to provide a prototype for reconfiguring the community of Clairemont Mesa into a more localized urban village. The goal was to define a spatial typology that can reorganize a generally undifferentiated community into one that possesses a definitive urban core and a renewed community identity .

EXPRESSION OF BALANCEFour Week Project

This project explored the relationships of built form and landscape. Formal techniques such as the use of extraction, insertion, and response to surface, was used to explore spatial relationships within the site. The focus was to generate a collaborative balance of form with the intent to designate a communal space that could encourage civil interaction, self reflection and introspection. Features which influenced the design include counterposed objects (contrapposto) and the importance of procession through space.
