Why Usera?

Migrants make up 12% of Spanish population

Five-fold increase since the 1990s

Starting in 2000 large numbers of Bolivians

began immigrating to Spain

Today, 4% of the Bolivian GDP comes from

remittances, most of which come from Spain

What did we look at?

Establishment name, street address, latitude,

longitude

Establishment type

Bar-Café, Bar-Restaurant, Bar, Bakery,

Supermercado, Frutos Secos (dry goods), Green

Grocer, Butcher, etc.

Ethnic marking

Visible via flags, name, décor, offerings, etc.

Status

Open, Closed, For Sale, For Rent, For Traspaso

Objectives

Map the data points

Look for patterns

Ethnicity distributions

Establishment type

Restaurant status

Initially:

Make data usable for Arc/Geocoding

Geocode using the addresses

BUT:

Yo no habla español

Madrid street layers unavailable

Map the data using the latitude/longitude data

Convert the coordinates into Decimal Degrees
