Various manually operated pumps used in Bangladesh.
What is pump
A pump is a mechanical appliance used to increase the pressure energy of a liquid, in order to lift it from a lower to a higher level.
Principles of pumping water
Atmospheric pressure
Positive displacement
Centrifugal force
Movement of columns of water caused by the difference in specific gravity.
Manually-operated indigenous water lifts:
Low lift.
Medium lift .
High lift
Low lift
When the depth to water surface does not exceed 1.2 m.
e.g : swing basket, don, Archedian screw, and water wheel
Medium lift
Height of lift is within the range of 1.2 to 10 m.
e.g: persian wheel, chain pump, circular two-bucket lift, counterpoise-bucket lift.
High lift
When the height of lift is greater than 10 m.
e.g: Rope-and-bucket lift, wind powered and water powered water lift.
Swing basket
Two person stand facing each other and swing the basket to fill in water.
The basket is raised and discharge into the field channel.
Optimum lift 0.9 to 1.2 m.
Average discharge 14000-19000 liters/hr.
Don
Manually operated boat-shaped trough, closed at one end and open at the other.
The open end is hinged to the discharge point.
Optimum lift 0.5 to 1 m.
Average discharge 9000-13000 liters/hr.
Archemedian screw
The device is manually operated and consists of a wooden or metal wheel drum with interior partition in the form of a screw, rotated by means of a handle fixed to a central spindle.
Optimum lift 0.5 to 1.2 m.
Average discharge 14000-19000 liters/hr.
Water wheel The water wheel consists of small
paddles mounted radially on a horizontal shaft . The shaft is driven by a b bullock-wheel drive. The wheel, when rotated, pushes the water to the field surface through the trough.
Optimum lift 1 to 1.2 m.
Average discharge 40000-60000 liters/hr.
Persian wheel
The persian wheel consists of a chain and buckets mounted on an open spoked drum and provided with a suitable driving mechanism
The capacity of the bucket ranges from 7 to 14 liters
Optimum lift 5 to 10 m
Average discharge 14000-18000 liters/hr.
Chain pump
The chain pump consists of an endless chain which is provided with leather discs or washers spaced at intervals of about 25 cm. when the wheel is turned each disc brings up a volume of water.
Optimum lift 3 to 6 m.
Average discharge 15000-20000 liters/hr.
Circular two bucket lift
The device uses two buckets which are alternatively raised, emptied, lowered and filed. While one bucket is filled and lifted, the other is lowered empty into the well.
Optimum lift 4 to 5 m.
Average discharge 12000-14000 liters/hr.
Counterpoise-bucket
This device consists of a long wooden pole which is pivoted as a lever on a post. A weight, usually a large stone or a ball of dried mud or a basket full of stones, is fixed to the shorter end of the pole. The bucket is drawn up by the counter-weight.
Optimum lift 1.2 to 4 m.
Average discharge 8000-11000 liters/hr.
Treadle pump
Farmer presses treadles up and down rhythmically with legs
Pistons connected to treadles move up and down in cylinders
Vacuum in cylinders sucks water out of ground
Water flows into irrigation pipe or tank
Pump can move 9.5 gal.(36l) of water per minute
Hand tube-well
A tube well is a type of water well in which a long 100-200(4 to 8 inch) wide stainless steel tube or pipe is bored into an underground aquifer. The lower end is fitted with strainer, and a pump on the top lifts water for irrigation.
