❖ President James K. Polk, elected in 1844, pushed for annexation of Texas

❖ Polk sent politician John Slidell to Mexico in 1845 to solve the border dispute, but Mexico refused to see Slidell

❖ 1846, Polk sent General Zachary Taylor to the border

❖ Taylor and his men were attacked by Mexican troops

❖ Polk used this as an excuse to declare war on Mexico
