Ribs, Pigs, & Watermelon | August 7th, 2015
“On Friday, August 7, 2015, OCSA KIWIN'S volunteered at
the Ribs, Pigs, and Watermelon Summer Festival at Hun-
tington State Beach, hosted by American Family Housing.
The main goal of the festival was to raise funds in order to help out the homeless
families by providing housing and social services. During the festival, more than
50 nationally ranked BBQ teams sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Socie-
ty competed to grill the best barbecue. For our KIWIN'S volunteers, we helped
out at a booth by preparing sliders and beans and selling them to customers,
and all profit went to charity. We worked with other volunteers in the booth, as
a team. Some members sliced buns, others prepared beans, and still others
worked the cashier. Other events during the festival included creative activities,
like watermelon carving demonstration, seed spitting contest, watermelon eat-
ing contest, cow milking contest, rib eating contest, and much more. On stage,
we were constantly streamed by rock and country music bands in the back-
ground. Overall, the festival was a very upbeat and lively event that raised
money for a great cause, while still having fun. “

Dylan Nishi deserves to be the August member of
the month be cause he has shown extreme dedica-
tion toward community service. He attended our
two major service events in the month of August
(Ribs, Pigs, and Watermelons as well as Someone Cares Soup Kitchen). At
Ribs, Pigs, and Watermelons, a BBQ contest, Dylan took on two shifts total-
ing up to six hours, while the rest of the volunteers only took one, totaling
to three hours each. He also volunteered at the Someone Cares Soup
Kitchen for another four hours, working for all four hours. In addition, he
has shown initiative in asking to help out in the community. He has been
actively asking me when he can help out and volunteer, and when he
can't make it to things, he seems genuinely upset. He is also eager to vol-
unteer outside of club events: for example, he has volunteered at events
such as Summerfest and Movies / Concerts in the Park (both in FV), events
Edison KIWIN'S has volunteered at, but at times where no one else from
the club was attending. Even though volunteering with Edison KIWIN'S
may not fit in his schedule, he makes sure to fit some volunteering into his
schedule which is very admirable.

Martin Nguyen, club secretary for OCSA KIWIN'S, has dis-
played a numerous amount of characteristics that quali-
fy him as Officer of the Month. When Martin first joined
OCSA KIWIN'S at the beginning of the 2014-15 term he often did not talk to oth-
er members and generally kept to himself. However, he has now become
much more talkative and social with not only OCSA KIWIN'S board but with
other KIWIN'S members outside of OCSA. He has started to take the initiative to
meet other people and for that I am extremely proud of him. Martin also per-
forms his duties as club secretary efficiently and responsibly. When he does not
know how to do a task he is comfortable with asking questions and learning
more about his duties. Martin is also very reliable and will follow through with his
words. Though he does not commit to every single event, when he does he will
be sure to show up. Martin Nguyen has grown socially in his time with KIWIN'S
and has displayed several qualities of a phenomenal board member includ-
ing, but not limited to, responsibility, efficiency, and reliability. For those quali-
ties he should be rewarded officer of the month.
