I discovered that the plumbers can be exposed to dangerous substances while welding or soldering, and they do not always use the proper protection gear.

I went back to the plumbers to observe welding in particular, and I found out why the products they have today for breathing
The plumbers are carrying a lot of equipment, they work in a wide range of environments and they have to work fast.
WORK ENVIRONMENTprotection does not always work sufficiently. Research shows that welding gases can be very dangerous to inhale. Also, the plumbers may not always be aware of the danger, since the effects of breathing in the fumes usually cannot be noticed right away.

The welding mask is good in some places but not all. Everyone doesn’t like to wear them and sometimes, it can be too bulky to fit the head between the pipes.

Term project in Advanced Product design. This time we were looking at something as complex as train accidents.
The task: To identify what needs there are for bet-ter rescue equipment or improvements that can be done to improve the safety of the passengers on the train.
I identified a need for better overview over the accident site, as well as better opportunities to organize the rescue work.

A NEW TRIAGE SYSTEM

Triage is when victims in an accident are sorted out so the most severely injured can be taken care of first.
In my concept I propose to automate this process by tagging the victims with a smart triage tag, that keeps track of the victims vital signs and location of the victim.
This part of the concept was further explored in my classmate Anton Hoffman’s work.

THE RESCUE LEADERSThe firefighters, the Paramedics and the police are collaborating to lead the work. They need to stand within reach of each other and do not leave the command area. They need a good overview to do a good job.
The Firefighters are often first on site in this mass casualty accident scenario. If they had tools to evaluate the accident and get an overview as quickly as possible, it would speed up the work.
Where are the ones that need help immediately? What is the status of this area?

In order to give a more lightweight feeling, the silver grey is the main part and the black has been reduced to protective, rubberized edges.
The orange accent color is chosen to make a connection with rescue equipment.

The balloon concept builds on the “helikite” - a balloon with kite wings. This holds the balloon steady in very strong winds. The camera package is attached underneath the balloon. The balloon is lit up so it can function as a beacon to guide later arriving rescue services to the accident, and as to not be a danger to helicopters.
CLEAN HANDS
My bachelor degree project came about as I saw on the news that the hand hygiene compliance at many hospitals was poor. The problem interested me because it involved a lot of human factors and the system for providing hand hygiene was not really adapted to the users.
As it turns out, there is a big chance of getting sick at the hospital.

10% 3,9 BILLION SEK MULTIRESISTANT BACTERIA
Every year 10 % of patients get an hospital acquired infection.
The extra time patients have to be hospitalized cost Sweden about 3,9 billion SEK each year.
The threat of multiresistant bacteria makes the problem more urgent.

The procedure to disinfect the hands is done very frequently and there are plenty of alcohol dispensers.
There are both manual and automatic dispensers, but the manual are more common due to lower price.
Lack of time in an emergency.Disinfectant placed on the walls force staff to take a detour and if it is placed on the beds it
can be in the way during transport.
PLACEMENT OF THE DISINFECTION LIQUID.
OBSERVATIONS
There is disinfection liquid in every room and in every toilet, but usually only in one place. If there are more than one patient in the room, the staff has to take an extra route to disinfect their hands between the beds.
If it is placed on the bed, it is often in the way in transportation.
There seems to be disinfectant alcohol everywhere, but still they often would need it closer. In an emergency they often need to disinfect their hands “on the run”.

PRIMUS FIRE STEEL
A short course in parametric modeling and solid works resulted in a small fire-steel. This is a product for hikers and campers and is used to make a fire. It is weather proof and much more reliable than matches or a zip lighter.
Primus is a Swedish brand known for their outdoor cooking utensils.

The fire steel is a very old product. It can be used about 10 000 times before it needs to be replaced.
- But what if you want to make a fire in the dark? I decided to add another kind of light.

CAN WE CREATE A MORE GENTLE CPAP THAT DOESN’T INJURE THE BABY?
CPAP TODAYCPAP - or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is a necessity for many premature infants. The products today are tricky to handle and can be intimidating to parents.
The current products are often handled in an incorrect way to pro-vide the correct air pressure to the infant. They are tighten too hard because of a leak, or sometimes attached in a incorrect way. The
product is also blocking the view of the child and is intimidating to the parents.

The current products can result in deformations and pressure wounds to the babys’ head and face. It is painful for the infant who may have to depend on these products for many months.

INITIAL CONCEPT DIRECTION
- Remove pressure from baby. - Simplicity.
- Human feeling.- Material features.
Our main direction was to try to remove the tension from the cables that was the reason the previous devices had to be tighten so hard. We focused on a concept with a very skin friendly high friction surface of silicone to hold the mask in place.
EXTENSIVE USER TESTING
We built mock-ups and tested every aspect of the design and functionality, based on the issues we had identified caused damages to the baby.
We aimed at simulating the hospital environment by for example handling all the concept models through a cardboard “incubator” and tested materials in a warm, humid environment, to imitate the incubator.

MATERIAL TEST
SIMULATING AN INCUBATOR
HIGH FRICTION, SILICONE MATERIAL DOES NOT HARM THE SKIN.
WE HAD TO TEST THE MATERIAL IN A WET AND HUMID ENVIRONMENT.
The hub connects the hoses and attach at any point near the infants head. The swivel and rotating point reduces tension. It is also an aid when lifting the baby.

Easy maintenance and cleaning with a plug and play system. This makes it possible to remove and replace only the nose mask without removing the whole head attachment - something that was impossible before.

The friction surface holds the mask in place from sideway forces, but something is needed to hold the mask in place if the baby moves a lot.
We designed a hood that gently holds the mask in place.

BACK IN THE BOAT
My master thesis in advanced product design is dealing with the theme boating and safety. I started with a very broad topic and the research led me to look at small motorboats and fall overboard.

I attended the lifesavers course in own safety at Öckerö Maritime Center close to Gothenburg in Sweden. It covered several aspects of staying safe
on water.

ACCIDENT AND DROWNING STATISTICS IN BIG BOATING NATIONS
Every year, about 40 people in Sweden and about 700 people in USA drown from boating related accidents. Many of these deaths occur when the victim falls overboard and many deaths could have been avoided if the victim had been taken some basic precautions, however, many small boats are very
difficult to climb back up in if one falls over board.

The percentage of accidents that are lethal is higher when the water is colder.
“I don’t need a life jacket, I can swim!”
Cold shock response.
Most people who drown were good swimmers.
The time frame in cold water in which one can save oneself is only between 10-30 minutes.
Cold water reduces muscle strength.
Many small boats have no ladder. It can be really difficult to climb up.
Most accidents happen in inland waters or close to the coast.
Most of the victims who drown while boating did not wear a life jacket.
Alcohol is involved in at least 20% of the accidents.
Most accidents happen to small open motorboats, or boats under 6 meter.

USER TESTS, GETTING BACK IN THE BOAT
A footstep in an angle out from the boat greatly enhances the ability to climb. A straight ladder does not aid in climbing as it creates a difficult position when the boat is tipping.
If the user is heavy and the boat very lightweight, there is a big risk of tipping the boat and sink it.
Especially if wearing an inflatable life jacket, one needs space on the inside of the boat to climb.

The inflatable units are intended for boats in the weight range of 40-100 kg. They can be manually inflated to prevent the boat from tipping over while climbing.
