Making NZ pest free.

How we can make New Zealand pest free. And saving our precious

Natives.

SIR PAUL.Ever seen a tui or some kind of bird dropped around your property. If you live near a forest or something its probably a ferret and if you don’t its probably a feral cat.Early this year, one of New Zealand’s greatest scientists, Sir Paul Callaghan, gave a speech where he put forward what his crazy and ambitious idea. The idea that one day, NZ could be completely predator free. Imagine that?

Why do it ?

• Ferrets love a nice big, fat, juicy kiwis or other birds.

• So would you if you were a scavenger with no money, just a stick and match.

• Plus NZ is one of the largest bird populated countries in the world and since we’re not recognised that much, we want keep our standards high.

The Zealandia project.Zealandia, formerly known as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, is a protected natural area in Wellington, New Zealand, where the forest is being restored. The sanctuary was previously part of the area for Wellington, between Wrights Hill (bordering Karori) and the Brooklyn wind turbine on Polhill.Map of ZealandiaMost of New Zealand's ecosystems have been severely modified by the introduction of land mammals that were not present during the evolution of its ecosystems, and have had a devastating impact on both native flora and fauna. The sanctuary, surrounded by a pest-exclusion fence, is a good example of an ecological island, which allows the natural ecosystems to thrive by minimising those introduced pressures.

Thank you for watching my presentation.
