Magneticresonanceimaging,MRI,hasbecomeanessentialdiagnostictoolworldwideduetoitsabilitytonon-invasivelydepictanddistinguishsofttissueswithinthebody.Atthemostbasiclevel,itutilizesaninducedmagneticfieldandapulsedradiofrequencywavetocreatedetailedimagesofapatient.Severalkeydiscoveriespavedthewayforitscreationincludingthetheoriesofelectromagnetism,nuclearphysics,andquantummechanics,whichledtothediscoveryofcharacteristicparticlespin.

History:Overthecourseofthe19thcenturyMichaelFaraday,JamesClerkMaxwell,andotherslaidthefoundationaltheoriesofelectromagnetism.Therewasfoundtobeaninherentdualityinnaturebetweenmagneticandelectricenergyfields,whichcouldbemanipulatedandquantifiedinconcertwithoneanother.

AclassicalMRIdevicecontainsasolenoidthatcarrieshighcurrentstogenerateamagneticfieldofafewTesla.Thefigureaboveshowsacrosssectionofsolenoidwherethecrossesrepresentacurrentintothepaperandthedotsacurrentoutofthepaper.Fromtherighthandruleyoucanfindthedirectionoftheresultingmagneticfielddepictedinthefigure.

Thediscoveryofnuclearspinstateshashadagreatimpactonhowweunderstandthequantumnatureofparticles.Imagingtechnologiessuchasnuclearmagneticresonance(NMR)spectroscopyandMRIaretheresultofourgrowingknowledgeinthisfield.Ithasbeenshownthatanucleuswilloccupyeitheroneoftwoorientations.ThisintrinsicphysicalpropertyiswhatismanipulatedbyanMRImachine.

AspectsofMagneticResonanceImaging:Thehumanbodyiscomposedprimarilyofhydrogenatoms(63%)andmostofourtissuescontainroughly75%water.MRImachinesthatarecurrentlyusedforclinicaldiagnosticpurposesmakeuseofthisfactthroughwhatisknownasthechemicalshift.Thechemicalshiftisdefinedasthedifferenceinresonantfrequencybetweenisolatedhydrogenanditsvaluewhenboundtoaspecificsitewithinamolecule.Differenttissueswillcontaindiversechemicalcompositions/environments,andthereforedifferentchemicalshifts,allowingfordiscernablecontrastbetweenthem.
