MAGNET PROGRAM MISSION
The program provides an academically challenging
environment in which each student’s educational
opportunities are maximized.
The Columbus Tustin Middle School Applied Math
and Science Magnet is the district's comprehensive
program emphasizing science and mathematics and
technology. The academic and co-curricular programs
are designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity, creativity
and risk-taking with the goal of encouraging
independence in learning.

The best way for kids to learn and
understand is to do. The Magnet
Program combines textbook learning
with individual and group research,
writing, and in-class projects and
experiments. “My daughter is getting
an early exposure to the kinds of
broad-level exploration of a subject,
analysis, and writing that are required
for success at the college level.”

Enrichment Opportunities
At AstroCamp students can
experience the thrill of discovery by
working with video telescopes, giant
binoculars, and high powered
telescopes. They participate in the
scientific method by constructing
and launching rockets fueled by
water and compressed air. At the
Emerald Bay Institute students
experience Catalina Island as a natural laboratory. They snorkel in the
waters observing fish and marine
plants in their natural habitats, they
conduct a plankton lab, they study
island ecology, marine biology, and
geology. At Raintree Ranch Camp in
the Julian mountains students can
explore four unique ecosystems. They
learn how animals interact with the
environment, practice animal tracking,
learn basic orienteering, shelter
building skills, perseverance, and the thrill of conquering challenges.
”The teachers in the Magnet
Program encourage their
students to reach for their goals
and to do their best. This
program is not all business—the
teachers want the students to
have fun!”

The Columbus Tustin Applied Math & Science Program offers a
unique learning environment. Magnet students spend the
majority of their school day in two core classes of Math-Science
and Language Arts-Social Science. The remainder of the day is
spent in PE and elective classes with Columbus Tustin students.
The scope of the students’ education extends beyond the
traditional classroom. Magnet students participate in science
outreach programs, field trips, and regional and national
academic competitions such as VEX Robotics (County, State and
National Competitions), Math Competitions, and OCSEF (Orange
County and State Science Fair).
The Columbus Tustin Magnet Program maintains high academic
standards and integrates academic disciplines as part of the
Magnet Program Core. Magnet students have the opportunity to
participate in a full range of extra-curricular activities and are
encouraged to enroll in STEAM, Performing Arts, and/or Foreign
Language elective classes. Magnet families understand that the
coursework is rigorous. The students develop study skills/study
habits today with an eye on future education. Magnet students
intend to enroll in high school advanced placement (AP) courses
and have college in their sights.
Magnet Program students may participate in week-long science
camps at Mountain Survival Camp, the Emerald Bay Institute Sea
Camp on Catalina Island, and AstroCamp. Students become field
researchers by using the appropriate tools to collect and analyze
data and document their research in science notebooks. Each camp
addresses the NGSS Standards and enhances and extends
classroom instruction.
The Magnet Program teaches students to become apprentice
investigators, learning not only math and science facts, but also the
processes of scientific research, discovery, and documentation. The
curriculum is based on NGSS and Common Core Standards as well as
current research on the teaching and learning of science.
Three years ago Magnet students entered their first Robotics
Competition. CT took home four top awards including 2nd place in
finals and 3rd place overall competing against 43 L.A. and Orange
County middle schools and high schools. Last year CT Robotics led the
district to our second VEX competition and continues to challenge high
school teams for a seat at the California State Finals.

Only students who are currently performing at or above
grade level are encouraged to apply
Priority in admission will be given to students performing
above grade level, or students showing evidence of
exceptional ability in the area of mathematics or science
Admission is selective and is based on application
responses, teacher recommendations, grades, and test
scores. Teacher recommendations and test scores have
been consistent predictors of success in the program.
